Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
There are quite a few of us who drive regularly to work and have become very accustomed to seeing many of the road markings that they have painted out on the highways. One of these is the solid double yellow line, which has been put in place to prevent you from going into the other lane to pass other vehicles. Like any other warnings, you need to be very cautious to obey these markings, because ultimately they are put there for your own protection!
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
There are certain boundaries that one must adhere to in order to faithfully serve the will of God. Like a no-passing zone, we must continually abide on our side of the highway, and never allow ourselves to venture into the other lane. This is a wicked world, and there is a lot of oncoming traffic which is heading in the opposite direction, but as a Christian we must keep on the straight and narrow path of biblical truth, and make sure that we keep on our side of the road.
Matthew 7:13-14 (KJB) Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
When we become baptized into the Christian Life, we begin to walk down a path that is much narrower than everybody else, simply because we have boundaries and restrictions that are set forth throughout the teachings of scripture. But these constraints are for the purpose of our safety and correction so that we can walk in the perfect will of God.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJB) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
God wants to save us, but it’s going to require accepting His guidance and leadership in every avenue of our life. As sinful creatures, people don’t like to have their life dictated by the commands and directions of others. This is because men in their general carnal nature, tend to be rebellious, uncooperative and unsubmissive. But for those who really desire to obtain eternal life, that attitude is going to have to change. Obedience is the key that unlocks the heart of our precious Lord Jesus. It pleases Him greatly when we obey, and He will bless those who walk according to His will.
Colossians 3:20 (KJB) Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
Like a double yellow line on a highway, there is a Spiritual line that divides us from the way that the world lives, and the way God expects us to live. It is a line between right and wrong, good and evil, and truth and error. To successfully live the Christian Life we must keep separate from those who abide in the other lane, because Jesus didn’t come to bring peace on Earth, but to divide.
Luke 12:51 (KJB) Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
Sometimes, when you are driving down a section of highway, there will be large wooded areas where you can’t even see the traffic that is heading in the opposite direction. Likewise, the more that you follow the path of Christ Jesus, the further apart from the world you are going to become. Like a divided highway, we must come out from the world and be separate, having no fellowship with the wicked works of darkness, but rather, abide in the light.
1 Peter 2:9 (KJB) But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
2 Corinthians 6:14-18 (KJB) Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
All of us have sinned at one time or another, making us all equally depraved in the eyes of God, but a Christian is not better than everybody else in this world, they have simply owned up to the truth that they are a corrupt wretch whose life needs to change. When we place our faith in Christ Jesus, God presents us with an incredible opportunity to start a brand new life, but this will require heading in a new direction. Rather than following the sinful path of human depravity, we must do a u-turn and follow the Spiritual path in Christ Jesus, a decision that will ultimately lead to division and separation from others.
Have you ever been driving across the country, and during your long trip, you happened to recognize many of the same vehicles because you were all heading the same direction? Perhaps you saw them at the rest stop, or even at the same restaurant where you sat down to enjoy your lunch. They might have waved at you when they passed you by, and you might have smiled at them when you passed them, but eventually you took an off-ramp and took a less traveled road in a completely different direction. When you made that decision, you knew deep down in your heart that you would never see them again.
In this world, you might have had many lifelong relationships with people who were outside the realm of faith, but as a Christian, we must develop new relationships with people who call on the name of the Lord out of a pure heart. Old relationships can be an extremely bad influence in your life because most often they will attempt to seduce you to do evil and immoral acts with them. This is because their conscience is not bound by biblical truth. In these situations the best thing that you can do is turn away from them. God wants to take us to a better place, but just like the Apostle Peter taught, we must always remember to remain on our side of the highway.
1 Peter 4:1-5 (KJB) Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
All of us have been on the wide road at one time or another, living in faithlessness and unbelief, but without any type of convictions and control, the heart will become extremely spoiled as it openly indulges in the wickedness of sinful living. God grants us a promise of eternal life, but it’s going to require our best efforts to humbly walk according to His will rather than the will of men. Remember that the decision to walk in the light is incompatible with those who choose to live in darkness, and unless God grants them repentance, we must continue to keep our distance. Like a divided highway, or two solid yellow lines, we must never cross over to the wide lane, making sure that we always remain on,..
