Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
Many men will go out to their gardens each spring, and begin sowing seeds into the ground, but Jesus wants men to plant the seeds of God’s Holy Word into people’s hearts. To become a follower of Christ is to be filled with the same deeds that He did. Everywhere that He went, He was helping people to grow in their faith by preaching the Gospel of Truth.
John 14:11-12 (KJB) Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
Have you ever had sons in your family go out into the field and help you to plant corn? To be faithful to the Lord Jesus requires more than just good intentions, it demands getting up and getting the job done!
Matthew 21:28-32 (KJB) But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not. Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.
But whenever you plant seeds, they really need to hit the right type of soil in order to grow into maturity and become fruitful. For example, let’s take a look at this passage of scripture from the book of Mark.
Mark 4:3-20 (KJB) Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow: And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up. And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth: But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred. And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable..And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them. And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables?
The sower soweth the word. And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended. And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.
Jesus describes that some seed will fall to the wayside, and rather than having the opportunity to grow at all, it will get eaten up by the birds. Sometimes when you preach God’s Word, the devil will take it from people’s hearts, even before it has a chance to sprout. This is one reason why we must spread as much seed as possible!
2 Timothy 4:2 (KJB) Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
At other times, seed will hit stony ground which is not the ideal conditions to grow in. This is because in order for a plant to become fruitful it has to develop a strong root system so it can draw the nutrients and water that it needs from the soil. Deep roots will also help it to survive the sometimes harsh conditions that it will experience in this world. The same thing will happen to people who become baptized into the faith, and joyfully receive God’s forgiveness for their past sins, but like a plant without a root they will only last for a period of time. When they have to suffer through cruel treatment and persecution for the teachings of scripture, they will turn away from the faith. To persevere in the Christian Life will require a strong root of endurance. Even in the military, soldiers will have to endure many difficult and trying situations, but some of them will eventually wash out because they simply could not endure them.
2 Timothy 2:3 (KJB) Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
Even a plant in your garden can do really well for a long period of time, but when it becomes inundated with weeds they can kill it. Some sources claim that certain parasitic plants can even attach to and drain nutrients directly from its roots and stems, while others can grow really large and deny your plant of the sunlight that it needs to eventually become fruitful. Jesus warns that some people who become a Christian will eventually be surrounded by worldly desires which will divert their attention and cause them to become unfruitful.
2 Timothy 4:2-4 (KJB) Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
The will of God is for men to rise up and preach, but for many of them, rather than investing in the long term and eternal things of God, they will focus on the short term and temporal things of this world instead
1 John 2:15-17 (KJB) Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
In order for a plant to grow into fruition it needs to be placed into good soil, and in order to bring forth Spiritual fruit, the seed of God’s Word must be planted into the heart of an obedient and faithful man. When it hits this type of fertile ground, that little mustard seed that has been planted can grow into something huge, and eventually produce fruit of itself. But be forewarned that many things in this world can prevent the future growth and duties of Christian men, by crowding out one of the things that is most important to our precious Lord Jesus,….
