Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
Many years ago, my family and I would fire up the four wheelers and begin to take a drive through one of the trails that we have behind our home. It was always a fun little adventure, and I always looked forward to finding a few mushrooms along the way. One of the very first mushrooms that I taught my children to find is the giant puffball, which basically looks like a large volleyball sitting on the ground. There was one spot in particular that we would always find a few, because they like to grow in open meadows and grassy fields, which make them even easier to see. They can grow to monstrous sizes, in fact one of the largest ones that we ever found was almost 18 in across! Another point is that giant puffballs can grow extremely fast, and in the proper conditions can grow to its full size in just a few weeks.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
When somebody finally believes in the Lord Jesus, it can cause a rapid change in their life. Just like watching a puffball growing out in the woods, genuine faith can cause someone’s life to change really fast!
2 Thessalonians 1:3 (KJB) We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;
When children are born into this world, their knowledge can grow at a very rapid pace. In fact, some people have claimed that 90% of brain development is completed by the time a child reaches the age of five. Even a newborn baby can change their physical appearance very quickly, because they are being fed each day with milk that will help them to grow at an amazing pace. Likewise, in order for a newborn child of God to grow at that steady pace is going to require being steadily filled with the milk of God’s Holy Word.
1 Peter 2:2 (KJB) As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
I’ve seen many different types of mushrooms out in the woods that have practically doubled in size overnight, and the same type of rapid growth can happen when somebody believes in Jesus with all of their heart. I’ve known people who became converted to Christ, and just a few days later, their entire outward appearance changed. They changed so much that they were hardly recognizable! Rather than wearing the clothes that manifested their own pride and rebellion, they clothed themselves in apparel that revealed a new sense of humility towards God. As strongly as they had resisted the will of God, they turned completely around and strove even harder to obey the will of God! Just look at the life of the Apostle Paul for example, who just shortly before his conversion, was trying to stop the Christian faith from spreading, but when he was converted, he ran as hard as he could in the other direction and began preaching the faith that he once tried to eliminate.
Galatians 1:21-24 (KJB) Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia; And was unknown by face unto the churches of Judaea which were in Christ: But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed. And they glorified God in me.
When we possess faith in Christ Jesus things can change in a big hurry. Just as quickly as the night can turn into morning, faith can cause an incredibly bright light to shine out of the darkness of a repentant heart.
2 Corinthians 4:6 (KJB) For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts,…….
Genuine repentance is a wonderful thing to see happen in someone’s life, because a soul who was once lost in the depravity of sinful living, has suddenly been awakened by the truth! They are like a tiny mushroom who had rain fall on them during the middle of the night, and by the next afternoon, they have grown by leaps and bounds! Heaven rejoices when this happens, because their faith in Christ Jesus has flipped on the light switch of their heart.
Luke 15:7 (KJB) I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.
When someone finally receives a spark of faith, it can quickly ignite into a raging fire, filling their heart with the Holy Ghost and a burning passion to serve the true and living God. The men who became converted to the faith, went out and preached the Word of the Lord everywhere!
1 Thessalonians 1:5-10 (KJB) For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost: So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.
For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing. For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
Faith in Christ Jesus is extremely powerful, because although it begins small, it can quickly turn into something really big!
Luke 13:18-19 (KJB) Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.
Things can change really quickly in someone’s life when they finally believe the truth in Christ Jesus. Sometimes the heart can change overnight, and in just a few weeks people become something completely different than what they once were. In many ways, it can be like walking into a dark room and flipping on the light switch, when God grants unto them the gift of repentance. One of the most powerful things in this world is faith in Christ Jesus, because it can tumble the steepest of mountains, and break through the hardest of rock, bringing into complete submission the proudest of sinners and transforming them into a saint. When people humble themselves under the mighty hand of God, and finally open up their hearts to Christ Jesus, change can happen really fast, and become really big, just like,…..
