Base Jumping

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

Many people like to go fishing, or take a ride on their bicycles, which are considered by most people as fairly mild and benign activities. But there are certain sports that are very hazardous, one which has become commonly known as base jumping. A lot of people refer to this as an extreme sport, because they jump off fixed objects, such as skyscrapers, high towers, and even steep cliffs. One of the reasons why it’s so dangerous is because unlike skydiving, your starting point is much closer to the ground, which really doesn’t give you a lot of time to react if your parachute happens to malfunction. Because of this, it is resulted in many serious injuries, and fatal consequences over the years.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Many people think that climbing a high mountain is dangerous, while others believe that going down a zipline is far more hazardous, but the most deadly thing of all is the lack of contrition and genuine sorrow for the wickedness that you have done towards God or others. This is because the end result is not just getting yourself killed, but being raised up to judgment day, only to be cast away to be punished forever in an eternal lake of fire!

Romans 2:5-11 (KJB)  But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: For there is no respect of persons with God.

When somebody is impenitent, they have no sorrow for the sinful things that they have done. They will wrong others, but they really don’t care enough about the other person to make things right with them. The only way that people can truly be forgiven for their sins is by demonstrating a genuine and sincere sorrow for the evil things that they have done. Genuine contrition will overwhelm the hardness of someone’s heart until it finally breaks open and displays the fruits of remorse.

Luke 18:10-14 (KJB)  Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Just like concrete, the longer that somebody goes without repenting, the harder the heart will become. Rather than remaining soft and pliable, it will turn rigid and cold, refusing to confess faults or admit the error of their way. This is why if you wrong somebody, you must take care of the problem immediately, because each day that passes, you are only digging a deeper hole, one that you will eventually fall into yourself.

Proverbs 16:18 (KJB)  Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Pride results from refusing to submit to the will of God, which is an attribute of the devil. Once this abhorrent attitude begins to manifest itself in somebody’s heart, it can begin to ruin close relationships, tear apart families, and completely destroy marriages. The Apostle James warned the church about the seriousness of pride, and that they needed to humble themselves before God.

James 4:6-10 (KJB)  But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

In the Corinthian Church there was fornication going on among them, but instead of being sorry about what had happened, they were filled up with pride instead. But after the Apostle Paul rebuked them, they were filled with Godly sorrow, and eventually repented of the deed that had been done.

2 Corinthians 7:6-11 (KJB)  Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus; And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more. For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season. Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

An impenitent heart is filled with pride, and will be contentious with the teachings of scripture, rather than humbly accepting and submitting to the will of God. This is an incredibly dangerous position to take, because at that point, someone is choosing an all-out battle with God, one that they will certainly lose in the end. Each day the refusal to repent of sin stirs God to anger, and He will bring forth tribulation and suffering upon those who mock His patient and merciful heart. The longer that Pharaoh waited to repent, the worse it got for him, as God plagued his nation, destroyed his army, and even destroyed the firstborn of Egypt.

I have found that there is nothing more hazardous in this world, then impenitence, because ultimately it will result in being sent to a place of everlasting punishment. So when you think something is dangerous, you had better think again, because the refusal to repent of ones sins, is far more deadly than a daily combination of all of the extreme sports in this world, including bull riding, wingsuit flying and even,……
