Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
When I was a young man I would get home from school, strap on a pair of my snowshoes and walk out into some of the large swamps that surrounded our rural home. I really enjoyed that solitude immensely, because I had the opportunity to be so far away from the harsh coldness of regular society. I would find a big log buried under the snow, sit down on it and then build a nice roaring fire to cook over. It was so quiet and peaceful, and you could get away from everything, even if it was only for the moment. But up here in our neck of the woods, just a little bit north of Waskish Minnesota is Big Bog State Park, and apparently it covers over 9,400 acres. The really nice thing is that rather than strapping on a pair of snowshoes, they already have provided a nice boardwalk so that you can walk safely out onto God’s creation.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Sometimes when I walked out into the swamp, I would suddenly bust through a thin layer of ice, causing me to fall the full length of my leg. I can remember that freezing water, piercing me with its sharp and bitter bite. Frozen water in these types of areas can be very dangerous, but that’s why it’s so nice to have a boardwalk, because it helps you to walk right on top of the water.
Matthew 14:23-32 (KJB) And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
In this passage, our precious Lord was showing Peter what faith in God can do in somebody’s life. There is nothing impossible with Him, and when you are filled up with His Holy Spirit there will be nothing impossible for you either. Like the bogwalk, the Christian Life is a very straight and narrow road, something that will demand our complete dedication and obedience, and rather than sinking into the mud of sin, we must place our faith and trust in Christ Jesus.
Matthew 17:20 (KJB) And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
But one must remember that our God is a God of symbolism, and would many times teach his disciples through a symbolic event like this one. With the Spirit of God we are capable of doing so much more than men could ever do on their own.
Luke 18:18-30 (KJB) And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up. Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich. And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. And they that heard it said, Who then can be saved? And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee. And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake, Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.
Remember that Peter was afraid when he began to sink, but when he cried out for help, Jesus saved Him. Peter was just learning, and still didn’t realize all the things that he was capable of doing yet. My son Jonah eventually learned how to swim, but one time when he was very young he fell into a river and screamed for help, but I immediately dove in after him. Since the time that I got certified as a lifeguard, I have always felt that this is the same way that Jesus is with us. God doesn’t want people to perish, He wants them to have faith and repent, which is one of the reasons why the same message has been preached for thousands of years. Sometimes that message has to be more stringent but it is what it is, and is for the purpose of correction.
Have faith in God!
Faith can overcome sin.
Faith can overcome lust.
Faith can overcome greed.
Faith can overcome avarice.
The Apostle Paul taught that we are supposed to turn to God and bring forth fruits meet for repentance, so find something good to do with your life and do it wholeheartedly! Put your faith in the Lord Jesus, and if you ever become fearful, cry out to Him with all of your heart, because He is always capable of putting you back on,……
