True Fellowship

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from the book of 1st John.

1 John 1:5-10 (KJB)  This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

This passage has a lot to do with fellowship, and Christian fellowship is being in a state of perfect unity with others, one that is based on belief and submission to the teachings of Christ. It is a close companionship between people who are on mutually friendly terms because they are perfectly joined together in the doctrines of our faith. You cannot have Christian unity and rebellion. You cannot have Christian unity without obedience and submission to the will of God. One must remember that walking outside of the light of biblical truth is to walk in the darkness, and when people determinately refuse to submit to the light of God’s Word, they must be reprimanded or we must keep our distance from them.

2 Corinthians 6:14-18 (KJB)  Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Obviously, some relationships can be restored through repentance and Godly sorrow, but if those qualities don’t exist in them, nothing is going to change. Consider the Apostle Peter who denied the Lord three times, but he wept bitterly about it because he knew that he had done the wrong thing. The Lord restored Him, and Peter went on to do many great things for Jesus. But hard-hearted impenitence must be rejected, for the safety of others in the church. The church is supposed to be a place of ex-sinners who are striving to better themselves, but you don’t join up with others who refuse to change. That’s not only being irresponsible, it’s foolish. Leaven has been represented as sin in the Bible, and like unleavened bread, it must be completely purged from our lives. We must keep ourselves separate from those who refuse to acknowledge their faults and work towards godliness through faith in Christ Jesus.

1 Corinthians 5:6-8 (KJB)  Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

2 Corinthians 7:1 (KJB)  Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

All of us are the same, we are equally sinners, but in order to serve Jesus we must become equally believers! This means the Word of God is the source of our faith and belief, and if people are going to choose to rebel against scriptural truth then they are living a lie, and you cannot share a close relationship with them. Obviously you should never surround yourselves with people who absolutely refuse to repent. That’s like someone trying to quit smoking and surrounding themselves with other smokers! The church is like a giant washing machine where we are cleansing ourselves from sin, but anybody who sincerely enters into church life needs to do the exact same thing, otherwise they become a stumbling block to those who are trying to serve and obey the will of God. Impenitent behavior results from pride, which is why the Apostle told the church to humble themselves.

James 4:4-10 (KJB)  Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Within the church we are undergoing a transformation, changing from what we used to be into a brand new creature in Christ Jesus. But this conversion can be hindered by one’s refusal to accept the truth and taking a good look deep inside of their heart.

2 Corinthians 13:5-9 (KJB)  Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates. Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates. For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth. For we are glad, when we are weak, and ye are strong: and this also we wish, even your perfection.

Those who truly love what Jesus did for them on the cross, are going to love Him enough to walk according to His will. Holy Communion is the ultimate form of everlasting fellowship, but you must remember that.submission to, and acceptance of the teachings of Holy Writ is the only foundation upon which you can build,…..
