The Breaker Bar

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

Have you ever tried to get rusty lug nuts loose on your vehicle? Sometimes it doesn’t matter how hard you try, because they simply will not budge an inch. But this can be solved by adding a longer lever which will add more torque to your efforts. Torque is the measurement of how much force that it takes to turn or twist an object. The nuts on many vehicles are torqued at about 100 foot pounds, but due to rust and corrosion, sometimes they will require much more to break them loose. When this happens, you can add a couple extra feet of pipe on the end of the lug wrench which is commonly known as a cheater or breaker bar. In a lot of cases this will help to remove most nuts, but sometimes it still won’t be enough for some of them. I was talking to my neighbor just the other day who showed me an 8-ft piece of pipe that he uses occasionally to break off old rusted lug nuts from his tires.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Like a rusty lug nut, sin can be very difficult to break free, simply because pride will get a stubborn grip inside of somebody’s heart. God wants us to go and sin no more but in order to do that, we are going to have to pull out the breaker bar of biblical truth.

Hebrews 4:12 (KJB) For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Sometimes it’s really easy to change out of a flat tire because the nuts really don’t resist you at all. They seem to easily submit to your wishes, as they submit to the power that you exert upon them. But sometimes they will withstand your efforts, refusing to move no matter how hard you try to turn them in the opposite direction. This is what pride does in somebody’s life, because rather than being filled up with humility, they will become hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

Hebrews 3:12-13 (KJB)  Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Impenitence is deadly, because the longer that one abides in that state, the harder the heart will become. It’s like leaving a really nice car parked out in a field for many years, but because of neglect, the lug nuts won’t give way by using the normal methods. This is why it is so important to have a steady daily diet of Holy Scripture, because it’s like putting penetrating oil on the heart so it doesn’t rust over, keeping them soft and pliable towards the will of God.

Colossians 3:16 (KJB)  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

The further people distance themselves from the teaching and preaching of scripture, the further they distance themselves from God. The things of this world begin to consume their hearts so that they no longer seek Him the way they used to in their past. The heart slowly becomes cold, and the pride creeps in, and the close relationship that they once had with the Lord begins to slowly fade away.

1 John 2:15-17 (KJB)  Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

At times, people in the church needed to be hit with a sledgehammer of Truth, in order to get them heading back in the right direction.

1 Corinthians 4:18-21 (KJB)  Now some are puffed up, as though I would not come to you. But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power. For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power. What will ye? shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love, and in the spirit of meekness?

Sometimes it takes an even longer extension on the breaker bar to break those prideful nuts loose.

James 5:1-5 (KJB)  Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.

Like pulling out an 8-ft breaker bar, James told the church they were a bunch of adulterers!

James 4:4-10 (KJB)  Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

It doesn’t feel good to get hit with a 2×4 of Truth, but the facts are that you either accept the will of God or you won’t. Just remember that if a lug nut won’t give in, mechanics have been known to cut them off, which is the same thing that God will do, if people refuse to submit to,….
