Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
How many of you have gotten out of bed in the morning only two trip over something in the dark? How many of you have prepared a large skillet of eggs and bacon only to accidentally dump them all over the kitchen floor? How many of you have gotten ready to leave for work, only to realize that you had a flat tire on your vehicle? On days like that, you really wish you could begin over because you had a really rough start to the day.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
When you think about it, each of us have had a really rough start since the very beginning, because all of us were born into this world as sinners. All of us share these exact same attributes, children of the flesh who have been headed down the wrong path since the very beginning.
Psalms 51:5 (KJB) Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
As men, our general tendency is to sin because we were born into these sinful human bodies. After all, those who are born of the flesh want to live according to the flesh. Although many of us might make our best efforts to better ourselves, it just isn’t enough to completely overcome sin. There is a huge difference between the physical realm and the Spiritual things of God. Human power, and even our own initiative is not enough to break free from the strong bonds of sin. It’s kind of like trying to put out a grease fire with the wrong type of extinguisher. Scripture is clear that in order to enter into heaven we must overcome sin, but the only way that is going to happen is by receiving the power of the Holy Spirit of God. This all begins by getting forgiven for all of your past sins by being baptized into the name of Christ Jesus. When we are buried beneath the water, we undergo an actual burial to the old sinner that we once were. Because of our act of faith, He then releases us from the bondage of our past life so that we can begin to serve Him as a new child of God. This is the very first step that must happen in order for you to receive the Divine power that God has waiting for you.
Acts 2:38-42 (KJB) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Although we all had a tough start in this life, through faith in Christ Jesus we can start over again! What needs to happen is we need to be reborn, just as the Lord Jesus taught Nicodemus.
John 3:1-8 (KJB) There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
But when we are reborn as a new child of God, we are going to need a daily supply of the milk of God’s Word in order to grow into maturity.
1 Peter 2:2 (KJB) As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
2 Peter 3:18 (KJB) But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
As we begin our new walk with God, we must begin learning the doctrines of our faith which are found throughout the teachings of scripture. Christianity is a faith that is taught to others, just like learning how to be a mechanic at the Vo-Tech. It is a faith that must be learned, just like sitting down at your desk at the local high school. Many people might claim that they have been a Christian for over 20 years but haven’t read very much of the Bible at all. That’s like someone claiming to be a plumber who doesn’t know the first thing about how to fix the kitchen sink. For many years the disciples were with the Lord Jesus every single day, as He taught them the precepts of the kingdom of God. Ignorance will not save you, but Spiritual education will lead you on the path towards your own salvation. Baptism is only the very first baby steps in the Christian Life, but to truly complete the Born again process, requires an obedient heart and a steady supply of God’s Holy Word.
1 Peter 1:22-23 (KJB) Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
So if you ever have a day that you wish you could begin again, remember that in Christ Jesus we have the opportunity to do just that. Through baptism, we can have a new chance at life, even though each of us had…..
