Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
How many of you have had the opportunity to watch soldiers sliding down a rope from a suspended helicopter? Sometimes they will use the UH60 Blackhawk for quick insertion of military personnel into places where a helicopter might not be able to land safely. Because of this, they have developed a technique called fast roping, where soldiers basically slide down a thick rope to the ground, using their hands and feet for friction as they descend. It is considered a fairly dangerous activity, and they have to go through rigorous training to learn how to do it properly. It’s been said that occasionally they may have to deploy from heights as high as a five-story building.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
As a soldier exits that helicopter, they must put a lot of trust in the rope to hold them up as they slide all the way to the ground. We too must place our complete trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, because when we do, He can keep us from falling.
Matthew 14:23-32 (KJB) And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
To possess faith is to place your complete confidence or trust in someone or something. Many times, human nature is filled with doubt, and is very mistrusting of others. For example, how many times have you been driving through town and had to ask somebody for directions, but after you pulled away from the curb you told your family that they really didn’t know what they were talking about. That’s called a lack of trust in the information that they gave you. Maybe they didn’t appear trustworthy, or maybe they didn’t even speak very well, but the directions that they provided you were perfect. The point is that when you trust others, you are going to believe what they say. In order to obtain eternal life is going to require trusting in God, in so much that you humbly submit to the teachings of Holy Scripture. We must surrender our inhibitions and completely give ourselves over to the will of God, and when we trust Him in this manner, good things are going to happen.
Psalms 37:4-5 (KJB) Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
Just like Peter, God is capable of keeping us from falling but it’s going to require your complete trust in Him
Jude 1:24-25 (KJB) Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,.To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.
A soldier can visually see the rope as they step out of the helicopter, but as a Christian, one must place their faith in the unseen things of God.
Hebrews 11:1 (KJB) Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Genuine faith will result in actions, even in situations that one might consider perilous. This is the same type of faith that David had when he placed his complete trust in the Lord to deliver him from Goliath.
1 Samuel 17:37 (KJB) David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
Noah’s actions were dictated by his faith,
Hebrews 11:7 (KJB) By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
Abel’s actions were dictated by his faith.
Hebrews 11:4 (KJB) By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
Moses’s actions were dictated by his faith.
Hebrews 11:24-26 (KJB) By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
So to become a follower of Christ we must trust Him enough to take us exactly where He wants us to be.
Psalms 4:5 (KJB) Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.
Psalms 16:1 (KJB) Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.
There are incredible blessings to those who place their faith in Christ Jesus, and when we truly trust Him, we are going to love Him, obey Him, and seek Him.
Hebrews 11:6 (KJB) But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Rather than being filled with doubt, we must believe and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and His teachings. We must understand that God cannot lie, and that the scriptures are true. We must dispel any reservations, and place our complete confidence in Him, just as soldiers have to put their faith in that rope, every time that they jump out of,….
