Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from The Book of John.
John 8:1-11 (KJB) Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
In this passage, the Pharisees were going to law with the Lord Jesus, but actually in the Book of Leviticus, both the adulterer and the adulteress were supposed to be put to death, which makes me wonder why the man wasn’t there. But these are the two testaments, one that is law, and one that is liberty. The Old Testament is about punishments and the New Testament is about mercy. Thank God for His grace, because no one kept the Old Testament anyway. The woman was obviously involved with sinful activities but the Lord didn’t condemn her to death, He just told her to go and sin no more. This is like modern day death penalties, which is one of the reasons why Jesus was hated so much by them. He was extending mercy to others and giving them the opportunity to correct their lives.
Galatians 6:13 (KJB) For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.
As I said over the years, the reason why the law was there was to convict us of our sins, so we understood that we needed God’s mercy through Christ Jesus. That’s why it’s the Old Testament, because it is finished.
Galatians 3:19 (KJB) Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
Remember that the people who wanted to stone the adulterous woman, were convicted by their own consciences, which means they took a moment to look inside of their own hearts and realize that they were sinners too. The only reason why this world is still standing is because of God’s long suffering and mercy. When He was on the cross, He could have called down legions of angels, but He didn’t.
John 3:17 (KJB) For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
To save something is to redeem it. If people were honest with themselves they would understand that they are wretched just like the rest of us. There were severe condemnations in the Old Testament, but we are all just as guilty as the next person. We need to show other people mercy so they can have the grace that they need in order to transform. Mercy is greater than judgment, because it can completely release you from sin.
James 2:8-13 (KJB) If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
What the Apostle is teaching us here is that If it wasn’t for what Jesus did, none of us would be able to enter into eternal life. After all, look at how much mercy the Lord taught Peter to show to others.
Matthew 18:21-22 (KJB) Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
Peter was even a recipient of some of that Grace, after He denied the Lord three times.
John 21:15-17 (KJB) So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
Peter was visibly grieved and filled with contrition for what he had done, but although he sinned three times, the Lord forgave him three times. Remember that the first commandment is to love God with all of your heart, and the Lord Jesus asked Him if He loved Him.
Ephesians 4:30 (KJB) And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Some of us will need more grace than others, but in order to become transformed into what God wants us to be, we must learn from our mistakes, come to the throne of grace in time of need, and go and……..
………Sin no More
