Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
People forget things every single day, from picking up their supper at the market, or going to the bank to make a deposit. Sometimes a child will forget to take their books to school, or be playing on the computer and completely forget about the schoolbus in the driveway. When you forget something it simply means to be unable to remember or think about something, and many things can get in the way and cause your memory to lapse. Sometimes young adults will forget to call home, or purposely stop thinking about others.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
There are incredible benefits to a close relationship with the Lord Jesus, but if you choose to forget about Him, you are going to miss out on your opportunity to claim them.
Psalms 103:1-4 (KJB) Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
Can you imagine if your mom was making a pile of homemade pizza, but then you forgot to come home? Can you imagine your dad firing up some burgers on the grill, but you stayed at your friend’s place instead? You would call those family benefits, but in order to receive them, you have to stay close to home! It’s the same way with our Lord Jesus. A benefit is an advantage or profit gained from something, and when we seek and serve the Lord Jesus, His blessings and rewards are on the way.
Hebrews 11:6 (KJB) But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
God wants to reward us with all kinds of good things, but we have to do what is right first. Haven’t you ever had a parent reward you for having a good year at school? Perhaps you got on the honor roll and they bought you a brand new bicycle. God obviously punishes evil because He is perfectly just, but you can be assured that if you do what is good and walk as a just and obedient man, just like Joseph, God is going to reward that.
Genesis 39:1-6 (KJB) And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither. And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian..And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand. And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand. And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field. And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
Even though Joseph had to go through much suffering and persecution, he did what was right according to his conscience, and God rewarded Him for it.
Galatians 6:7-9 (KJB) Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
To ultimately get to heaven requires works, because the Apostle James teaches that you must be doers of the word. A doer is a man of action, which means that your lifestyle needs to come into submission to the will of God.
James 1:21-25 (KJB) Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Look at all the wonderful things that God does for us each and every day. He causes the sun to rise and set. He brings forth fresh food right out of the ground. He puts fish on our fishing pole. He grants us tender mercies, and heals us from all of our diseases. He is kind and tenderhearted, and we must lift up thankful hearts to Him every single day.
Psalms 116:12 (KJB) What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?
Psalms 68:19 (KJB) Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah.
The Lord Jesus was filled up with so many good works that they couldn’t be written in all the books on the Earth. We need to do as many good things as we possibly can, because they are a demonstration of our faith in action, and highly profitable to our souls.
Titus 3:8-9 (KJB) This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
Like a dad who loads you up with a plateful of meat and potatoes, continue to strive after what is good, because I know that sooner than later, you are going to be blessed with a table full of….
