Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
A lot of people like to grow their own food at home, and will plant a nice big garden in the backyard. But occasionally, they will have to pull out some tools and begin digging up the weeds that have began to showing up. Many of them can grow very quickly and need to be managed and kept under control, otherwise they can begin to take over the garden and starve the good plants of the much needed nutrients that they need to survive
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
In order to serve God, sin needs to be completely eradicated from our lives. We must be so filled up with the Holy Spirit that sin has no power over us any longer. The old person that you once used to be, along with the sinful works of the flesh must be put to death permanently. We must bring forth the Spiritual fruit of the Holy Spirit, and make sure to dig up all of the sinful weeds in our lives.
Romans 8:12-14 (KJB) Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
In order to become pleasing unto God, we need to focus our hearts on seeking Him and the qualities of the Holy Spirit. All of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God, but in order to be saved eternally we must rid ourselves of sinful behaviors, which is done through a process of self denial. We must completely resist the works of the flesh and embrace the fruits of the Holy Spirit. We need to redirect our hearts on the things of God rather than the things of this world
1 John 2:15-17 (KJB) Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him..For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
There are so many things in this world that can pull you away from a close relationship with God. They can actually deceive you and lead you away from doing the will of God. The Apostle Peter warned that worldly lusts will war against the soul.
1 Peter 2:11 (KJB) Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
Lust is defined as an intense longing for something, and a lot of the time it is associated with strong sexual desires insomuch that you wish to regularly gratify them. Rather than focusing someone’s efforts on these types of things, we must refocus our hearts on good things.
Romans 13:12-14 (KJB) The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
Inordinate affections are cravings for certain things that pull us away from God and His purpose for our lives. These sinful desires can slowly chip away at one’s heart, and ultimately result in harmful consequences in one’s life. We must deaden them off, removing them completely from our lives like breaking off dead branches from a tree.
Colossians 3:5-8 (KJB) Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
We are given innumerable amounts of forgiveness through the riches of God’s grace, but we don’t want to use that mercy as a license to sin against others. Rather, we want to treat others the way that we would want to be treated, and walk in the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 5:13-24 (KJB) For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,.Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
The Apostle teaches that we must crucify the flesh, which basically means to put to death all of the Earthly lusts and desires that are a part of the carnal nature.
2 Corinthians 7:1 (KJB) Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
We will have to eliminate everything in our lives that go against the will of God. Heaven is a prepared place for prepared people so we are just going to have to start looking deep down into our hearts, and start…….
