Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
I’ve taken many long drives up the North shore during my life, visiting gooseberry falls, and getting the opportunity to take a walk through the Split Rock Lighthouse. I don’t think they could have chosen a more appropriate place to build it, as it stands prominently, high out on the top of a huge rock for all the ships to see. Lake Superior has always been considered a hazardous body of water, and has become known as a graveyard with 350 documented shipwrecks. Back in 1905 there was a massive storm, with huge winds and heavy snows, which damaged approximately 29 ships and killed 36 seamen, and because of this event, it sparked a great need for the construction of a lighthouse. Finally in 1910 they completed construction of the Split Rock Lighthouse to help guide freighters through the dangers of the lake. Because of better electronic navigation, it was decommissioned in 1969 but continues to be lit every year on the 10th of November to commemorate the Edmund Fitzgerald, and other ships that have been lost in the Great lakes.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
When people could see the light of the Split Rock lighthouse, shipwrecks could be avoided, and when we keep our eyes focused on the light of God’s Holy Word, it can help us to keep away from dangerous obstructions in this world. Each of us are like vessels traveling across the ocean of life, but as we sail through the darkness of this sinful place, we need something to guide our way. Our navigation is found when we keep our eyes focused on the teachings of Holy Scripture and the bright light of Christ Jesus,
John 8:12 (KJB) Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Like the bright light of a lighthouse, the Lord leads us through the darkness, and safely guides us away from the dangers of sin, into the light of goodness, righteousness and Truth. When people walk in darkness, there are many things that can happen. If you walk through your living room without the lights on in the middle of the night, you can trip over something or stub your toe. If you were to try driving your vehicle in pitch black without headlights, you could drive off the road and right into the ditch. Light helps us to see where we are going, and when we focus on Jesus and the teachings of scripture, He helps to guide us all the way home to heaven.
Psalms 119:105 (KJB) Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalms 119:130 (KJB) The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
Unlike the Split Rock Lighthouse which only lighted up a part of Lake Superior, Jesus is the light of the entire world.
John 12:46 (KJB) I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
Jesus Christ is the true light, and the light of men.
1 John 2:8 (KJB) Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
John 1:3-4 (KJB) All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
John 12:46 (KJB) I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
The Lord wants us to be a shining light unto others, but in order to do that, we need to walk in the true teachings of the Christian faith. For example, there are many people who are guides up in our area, who will show people where to hunt a bear or even catch fish. But in order for them to help others do that, they will need to have a very good understanding of what they do. They need to be quite knowledgeable about their trade so they can help others bring home the trophy that they desire. Likewise, God wants us to be a light unto others, but to do that requires that we understand and.walk in the truth of scripture.
Ephesians 5:8-10 (KJB) For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
The Lord Jesus was constantly educating His disciples in the faith, so they could guide others in the right direction, and put them on the path of Spiritual truth. To guide others in biblical truth, we must understand the will of God, which will only happen when you seek the wisdom of God with all of your heart.
Proverbs 3:13-18 (KJB) Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
Many people in this world are trying to be a light to others, and will even claim that they are upright and moral, but at the same time they do things that are completely against the will of our Lord Jesus Christ. The world’s form of righteousness is oftentimes very skewed, in comparison to the teachings of Christ. To shine brightly, we must be filled with Spiritual wisdom and the knowledge of God, and in a world filled with lies and deceit, nothing shines brighter than the truth of Holy Scripture.
Matthew 5:14-16 (KJB) Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
As this world grows darker and darker, seducers and deceivers will wax worse and worse, and the true men of God are slowly disappearing from this Earth. Many times the ones who remain will have to stand all alone, and brave the wind, the storms and all the contradictions of a deceived world. But like a soldier on the front line, they must hold their ground, for the sake of those whom they are called to protect. Their lamps must be burning brightly and their feet planted upon the rock of scripture, something that I’m always reminded of, whenever I get the opportunity to see,…..
