Treasures in Heaven

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

There are a lot of people in this world that are extremely poor, and really don’t have what they need to get by from day to day. On the other hand, there are other people who are sitting quite comfortably, with incredible amounts of money that they have stored up in their checking accounts. Sometimes rather than using their finances right away, a lot of the time, people will transfer most of their money into their saving accounts for later use.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Many people have incredible amounts of money in their checking accounts, or invest it in all kinds of different possessions, from expensive real estate to luxury cars and boats. Some people will put all of their money into gold, diamonds, or other earthly treasures. But the things that one can obtain on the Earth are extremely temporary, because the Bible has concluded that God is eventually going to destroy this world and everything in it. Not only that, but when people store up wealth for themselves, many times they will get robbed! For example, when they store up all of their fancy possessions in their warehouse, it will get broken into. When they buy a brand new vehicle, they might wake up in the morning only to find it gone. Even in the wild west, some people would work for an entire year and put it all in the bank, only to have it stolen by thieves.

But if people learned to be content with the simple things that they have from day by day, they could invest a lot of their wealth into the things of the Kingdom of Heaven. When you give to the furtherance of the teachings of the King James Bible, you are investing it in something that will never fail. Whenever people gave to the Apostle Paul for the furtherance of his ministry, they were transferring money from their Earthly saving account into a heavenly one. A lot of wise investors are looking for long-term investments that will be rewarded in the end, but when you invest in the things of Christ Jesus and His teachings, you are putting your wealth into an everlasting savings account. Unlike all of the bank accounts in this world which will only come to naught, when you invest in the things of Christ Jesus, you are depositing your treasures into the everlasting vault in Heaven.

Luke 12:33-34 (KJB)  Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

If people were brutally honest with themselves, they would have to understand that most of the things that they have are really not needed at all. Sometimes people will work hard for a few weeks, and then go out and buy something expensive from the store. They might use it for a month, but then they get bored with it, and it ends up being put into storage So I ask, what was the point of buying it anyway? If that was going to be the end result, think of the good things that they could have used that money for.

Matthew 6:19-21 (KJB)  Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

In another passage of scripture Jesus told a wealthy ruler to give to the poor and store up his treasures in Heaven, but he simply couldn’t do it.

Luke 18:18-27 (KJB)  And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up. Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich. And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. And they that heard it said, Who then can be saved? And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.

Once again, many people have stored up a lot of money in their savings accounts, but when you freely gave to the work of the Apostle Paul, you were basically transferring your earthly wealth into God’s Heavenly account.

Philippians 4:15-19 (KJB)  Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity. Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account. But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God. But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

It’s clear from the teachings of scripture that when you lovingly and sincerely give to the things of God, it shows that you are righteous in His sight.

Hebrews 11:4 (KJB)  By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

All over this world, people will donate their finances to certain causes that they believe in, such as saving the whales or the rainforests. But when you gave to the work of the Apostle Paul, your financial gift was being used for the eternal salvation of souls. People will spend all kinds of money in order to save people who are lost at sea or gone missing out in the woods, but when you give to the things of the church, you are giving to men of God who are seeking to save lost souls. That is an investment that will reach far beyond the temporary concerns of this world. Those who invest in Heavenly things are going to be rewarded by God, but the unused riches of the wealthy will only count against them at the judgment.

James 5:1-6 (KJB)  Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.

So whether it’s an investment of your wealth, your time, or even your possessions, God will reward you according to your works. This world and everything in it, is like a wisp of smoke, and before you know it, it will all be gone. So rather than losing everything that you have worked for, a wise man will invest in things that he knows he will receive some sort of a dividend, and the only investment that will never be lost are the investments that you have made towards the things of Christ Jesus. Rather than storing up treasures here on the Earth, make sure that you get a full reward by storing up your……
