Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from the book of Matthew.
Matthew 13:3-23 (KJB) And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
First of all in this parable, the Lord explains that the seed that He is speaking of is the Word of God. Scripture is described as an incorruptible seed by the Apostle Peter.
1 Peter 1:23 (KJB) Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
In order to be born again and converted to the will of God, we need to understand the teachings of our faith. Understand means to interpret the true meaning of something. When the disciples didn’t understand something, they would ask the Lord questions and He would explain it further to them. We must cry out for understanding, so that the seed of God’s Holy Word that has been planted in our hearts becomes fruitful.
Proverbs 2:1-5 (KJB) My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
Sometimes a plant will not grow because it lacks a strong root. It is a root that provides them with stability, and the food and water that they need to grow. Without it they just wither up and die. To live a successful Christian Life, the teachings of scripture must take a strong root deep inside of our heart, but for some, that root will not take hold. Rather than being able to weather the strong storms of persecution and suffering in this world, they will walk away from the teachings of the faith instead.
1 Thessalonians 3:3-4 (KJB) That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto. For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.
Philippians 1:29 (KJB) For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;
Sometimes a plant will become unfruitful because it will get crowded out by weeds. To be fruitful in the Christian Life, God must be our first and greatest love, making sure not to allow one’s heart to become distracted by the things of this world.
1 Timothy 6:10 (KJB) For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
1 John 2:15-17 (KJB) Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
In order for a plant to grow and flourish, it needs to be planted in the right type of soil. When the seed of God’s Holy Word is planted inside of a faithful and obedient heart, eventually, it’s going to bring forth fruit.
John 15:5 (KJB) I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Not everybody who hears the teachings of scripture are going to bring forth Spiritual fruit in their life. Just like any of your plants out in the garden, the seed of God’s Holy Word needs to be planted on,…..
