Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
There once was a man who had a young dog who was extremely resistant to his authority. He was a very kind man, who even went out and purchased the dog a very nice overstuffed pillow for him to sleep on. Every sunset, when the light began to dim, the dog would curl up on his comfy little bed in the corner and fall fast asleep. But each day was a constant fight with his owner because he continued to refuse to submit to his control. After being constantly rebuked, the owner woke up one morning only to find out that his furry companion had run away. This grieved the owner deeply because he cared for the dog, but he had to accept the fact that he was gone, and move on. The next summer when he was splitting wood, the owner recognized his dog when the creature walked up to him in the backyard. But the dog was different, because his head hung low, and you could tell that he was filled with shame for what he had done. But the owner gladly received him back again, and after giving him a good meal of fresh dog food, the creature returned to his corner once again, curling up on his overstuffed pillow and sleeping soundly for the next few days.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Some wives will run off on their husbands, and some children will run away from home, simply because they don’t want to submit to somebody else’s control. But those who choose that path will only encounter suffering and consequences for their own rebellious behavior, not only with law enforcement, but with our precious Lord Jesus Christ. Some people have to learn the hard way, and be dealt many blows until they finally recognize the foolishness of what they have done. Sometimes people don’t recognize the good things that they have, until the consequences of their behavior finally appear.
Luke 15:11-32 (KJB) And he said, A certain man had two sons: And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.
And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
The prodigal Son was living a good life when he stayed at home with his dad, but he wanted to venture off into the world and right into the arms of people who could care less about him. There is something to be said about a dad who is content with his adult children living at home with him. Nowadays, a lot of parents can’t wait to kick their kids out of the house, or send them off to a distant college somewhere, just so they don’t have to deal with them anymore. But not all parents are like that. This is because some of us love our children dearly, just as the Lord Jesus loves us. But sometimes, you don’t realize how good you have it, until it is gone. Like pulling the plug on a fishing boat, only when it’s taken away will you realize the huge hole that it was filling.
This world is a vicious and unforgiving place, filled with people who are malicious, self-centered, and cruel. It’s a dog eat dog world, and sometimes people need to live amongst them until they finally realize how good they had it in the past. The Prodigal Son finally came to that conclusion. After all, when he was home he didn’t have to slave at a job somewhere just to pay the rent. He didn’t have to worry about buying clothes or food, because they were already provided. He didn’t even have to be concerned about how he was going to make ends meet. Just like a puppy, he already had a nice place to curl up and sleep, and what more can you ask for in this life? So obedience and submission to those who are over you in the Lord is a very small thing, in comparison to the suffering that you will encounter when you reject the counsel of a loving dad. It’s not grievous to obey the man of the house, but if grief is what they are looking for, they will certainly find it when they choose to walk off on those who truly care about their souls.
In the story of the prodigal son, the yoke of his dad was easy, and his burden was light, but some people will choose the path of rebellion, and suffer at the hands of the world instead. How many times must people get kicked around and mistreated until they finally come to their senses of how good they had it? How many times do they have to be ripped off and underpaid until they finally recognize the goodness of their own dad? How many times do people have to wander away from God, and be misused and maltreated by those who hate him?
So today I asked you, what’s it going to take until you finally return back home to God? When will you have had enough and finally call out for His mercy? Just like the prodigal son, when will you return home, to a place filled with plenty of food, lots of cold drinks, and even a bed in the corner, that has been patiently waiting, for……..
