Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
A lot of people have had the opportunity to fly in an airplane, but when you are sitting in the pilot seat, you have to be very careful about the decisions that you make. The pilot must pay close attention to their airspeed and especially the angle of attack when they take off from the runway. This means that when you leave the runway, a conventional airplane cannot shoot straight up in the air, unless you have rockets like a fighter jet. For most civilian airplanes, they only have so much power available, and a lot of new pilots will try to ascend too quickly which cam result in a loss of lift. This is known as a departure-stall or power-on stall. This precarious scenario can happen because the plane does not have the power that’s needed in order to ascend as quickly as the pilot wants to.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
There are many people who want to ascend into heaven but just aren’t going to make it simply because they are completely underpowered. Without the indwelling of the power of the Holy Spirit and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, they will eventually stall in their efforts, and come up short of eternal life.
Hebrews 4:1-2 (KJB) Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
Many things in this life require power in order to complete a task. I mean think about it for a moment. It takes power to pull a plow through a field, either from a horse or from a tractor. It even takes power to get up out of bed each morning as your muscles lift you up onto your feet. Well, it takes the power of the Holy Spirit to help us overcome the sinful lusts of this world, and like somebody who gives you a free outboard for your fishing boat, God gives us the free gift of the Holy Spirit when we place our complete faith in His Son Jesus.
Acts 2:38 (KJB) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Maybe you have seen some movies on television about engine failures on large jet airplanes. This is an extremely hazardous situation because it is forward speed that keeps the plane flying. As the wind goes over the wings, it creates lift, which causes the aircraft to continue to fly high up into the sky. But as soon as one of the engines gives out, the plane will begin to slow down. If you cannot increase your speed, either by getting the engine restarted or pointing the nose down in order to gain more forward momentum, the aircraft will eventually stall, and begin falling to the ground. Power is very important on an airplane, but even more so in the Christian Life because it is the power of the Holy Spirit that will help us overcome all of the sinful temptations in this world, and rise high above our enemies.
2 Timothy 1:6-7 (KJB) Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power,…….
Maybe some of you have gone water skiing before. I grew up on a small lake and spent a lot of time skiing during our summer vacation. But when you ski, in order to stay on top of the water requires forward motion. It requires the power of a motor as a boat pulls you quickly across the lake. The bigger the motor, the higher up above the water you will be. When I was finally done skiing for the evening, the boat would pull up next to our beach and slowly decelerate and I would find myself quickly sinking back into the water once again. It takes power to ski and stay on top of the water. It takes power for an airplane to stay high up in the air. It also takes power to live as a Christian, and it is found in the Holy Spirit of God.
Acts 1:8 (KJB) But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Not too long ago I was trying to take a tire off my truck and I actually bent the tool because the lugs were on so tight. But someone helped me out and used a powerful impact wrench, which took the nuts off with ease. Sinful temptations can be very difficult to remove from one’s life, but with the power of the Holy Spirit we can overcome them all. This is something that God freely gives us, but we must have faith in Jesus to possess it.
In Christ jesus, we have the promise of eternal life, but if you truly want to reap that promise, then certain things in your life are going to need to change. Genuine faith will result in your conversion, transformation, submission to the will of God, mortification of the flesh, contrition, Godly sorrow, and most of all, repentance from dead works. These qualities are the evidence of and inward faith, and the indwelling of the power of the Holy Spirit.
2 Thessalonians 1:11 (KJB) Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:
A lot of fighter jets don’t even need a lot of lift because the pilot is basically sitting on top of a huge rocket, which gives them an incredible amount of power to do whatever they need to do. That’s just an Earthly engine, just think of what you can do with the engine of the Holy Spirit! We must be constantly filled up with its power, so that we have plenty of throttle available, to lift us up and out of the depths of sin and into the clear skies of holiness.
Remember that in order for us to have a successful Christian Life, we must be constantly filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, so that we can continue to climb towards the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Like a bird needs the power of its wings to fly, we need the power of the Holy Spirit to break free from sin, so that we can rise above all of the sinful temptations of this world, and completely avoid the….
