Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
Recently I was sitting in the rocking chair out in my living room, and as I looked out the window, I saw a large red squirrel as he perched himself up in a tree branch. Suddenly, he began jumping from tree to tree, like a child playing hopscotch on a sidewalk. He was very high up in the air probably more than 20 feet, but each time he jumped to the next tree, he never fell down because his claws would sink deeply into the trunk of the next tree. Like a rock climber being tethered to the side of a mountain, the claws of that squirrel kept him securely anchored in place, and prevented him from falling down.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
There are a lot of dangers and temptations in this world, but to prevent us from falling down, we need to keep securely anchored in the teachings of our faith. Like a red squirrel that tightly grips the next tree, we must hold on tightly to the teachings of Holy Scripture, because if we believe and obey them, they can prevent us from falling all the way down to the ground.
Matthew 7:24-27 (KJB) Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
Out in my backyard, I used to have a huge tree that I nicknamed Big Ben. And although we have had some incredible storms come through our area, it continued to stand for many many years until eventually I needed to cut it down. It’s root system was immense, and obviously it would have to be in order to hold up a tree of that size. As we continue to grow in our faith we too will need to develop deep roots. We must be so secure in the teachings of scripture that the strongest of storms in this life can never knock us down.
Colossians 2:6-10 (KJB) As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
Each day that passes, is like a squirrel jumping to the next tree. Every morning when we wake from sleep we must be ready to cling to the teachings of our faith. The world might throw many hazardous situations at us during the day, but it is during those moments that we must hold securely to the teachings of our faith, and submit ourselves completely to the will of God. It’s more than just knowing the teachings of God’s Word, we must cling to God’s Word, which means that when people try to lead you away from the teachings of biblical Truth, we are so strong in our faith that nothing can pull us away from the Spiritual wisdom that we have been educated in.
1 John 2:14 (KJB) I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
1 Timothy 4:16 (KJB) Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
Christianity is much more than just claiming to believe in Jesus, because if you truly want to be blessed by God, it requires that you take the things that you have learned and apply them to your everyday life.
James 1:21-25 (KJB) Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Psalms 119:2 (KJB) Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.
When people build a house, a lot of the time they will usually pour a strong foundation. When this is done, the home will stay firmly in place when it is completely built. This is the same way that we need to live our lives towards God. If you want His blessings, you will need to build on the firm foundation of Holy Scripture. But it’s more than just understanding the will of God, it is submitting yourself completely to the will of God. When we firmly abide in the writings therein, nothing will be able to move us away from His calling and purpose for our lives.
John 15:10 (KJB) If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
There have been some incredibly large ships that have been created over the centuries, but just like claws on a red squirrel, the thing that keeps these vessels securely in place in the harbor is a strong anchor that has snagged itself on the seabed. When they have a firm enough grip on the ocean floor, they become unmovable, even in the strongest of winds.
1 Corinthians 15:58 (KJB) Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
A home can be destroyed in a flood, and a ship can be wrecked upon the rocks, and it all comes down to how securely they are held in place. If you want to keep above all of the pitfalls of this world, you will need to cling deeply to the teachings of scripture. You must wrap your hearts around them, and hold tightly to the trunk of our faith, as you prepare to jump into the next day, just like watching,….
