Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
One year I happened to be shopping when I came across an incredibly cheap soft side hot tub that was on sale. It was about 5 ft across and could be blown up with air in just a few minutes. One of the nicest features on this tub was that it came with a small compressor, and when it was turned on, we could have lots and lots of bubbles! I can still remember the expression on my children’s faces the very first time that they sat down in it! They screamed and giggled with glee because they had never seen anything like this before! Even when we were buried in a snowstorm, we could set it up in the living room for a few days, and sit in it as much as we wanted. It was one of the cheapest forms of entertainment that I ever found for the family, and other than the initial purchase price, the only thing that it cost me was a few extra gallons of gas for the generator, and a couple armloads of dry firewood.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
There are so many simple pleasures in this life that really don’t cost much at all. But rather than being content with the little things, so you can spend more time with God and with others, a lot of people will constantly lust after more and more and more, and in the process, miss out on the most important things in life.
1 Timothy 6:6-10 (KJB) But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
One of the reasons why I left numerous good paying jobs and moved out into the woods was so that I would have more time available to seek after the teachings of scripture, and to instill my beliefs deep inside the hearts of my children. To do this requires time, something that most people are not going to want to relinquish. Think of all the things that Moses could have had if he had remained in Egypt, but in the end, he walked away from it all. This was because the things of God were far more important to him than anything this world had to offer. Coveting after the things of this world is really a terrible sin, because it pulls us away from a close relationship with God, and from His Divine calling for men to disciple others in the faith. Jesus was constantly calling out to men to preach the Word, but most of them didn’t have the time.
Luke 9:57-62 (KJB) And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
What do you really need in this life to get by for the next 24 hours? In all honesty, we really don’t need that much when you learn the virtue of contentment. But this world is filled with all kinds of different eye candy which causes people to want a bigger truck, a bigger house, and a bigger bank account. They will follow after these things blindly, which will only lead them to numerous sorrows and unfruitfulness as well.
Mark 4:18-19 (KJB) And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
The Apostle John teaches the same Spiritual Truth.
1 John 2:15-17 (KJB) Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Ultimately God wants men to bring forth fruit, but the worst part is that they have buried themselves so deeply in the things of this world that they have become completely blinded to the task at hand. Bringing forth fruit is going to require time and effort, but most men in this world simply won’t make the time to reap fields or sow seeds, and it’s going to require a lot more effort than just planting a few seeds. After all, you might have to plant 100,000 of them! This is because in the world, the wicked ones are trying to destroy churches, destroy the faithful, and destroy the path of Divine Truth. But their time is short and their efforts will most certainly fail, because when the devil rips up two plants, the man of God will plant ten more! Laboring for the Lord requires time, but I guarantee that if you do not learn the virtue of contentment, you will never have the time available to do what God wants men to do. To truly be content, you must be satisfied with what you have.
Most people cannot discern the difference between wants and needs, and because of this they will spend their lives chasing after the things of this world rather than the things of God. I guess I could have gone out and got a job and spent the next six months putting in a hot tub for my family, but you know what? It only took a day’s worth of work and we had years of fun. Being content is a great thing, because while everybody else was out slaving at a job somewhere, I could spend months on end teaching my children about the doctrines of Christ, as we sat in the bubbles of…..
