Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
How many times have you heard the old saying, we will cross that bridge when we get there? Everybody is so concerned about tomorrow or next week, that they completely forget about the important things today. There are over 1,400 minutes every single day, and that’s enough to be concerned about for now! We certainly don’t have to worry about tomorrow, simply because it hasn’t arrived yet, and it is certain that God can change everything.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Taking no thought about tomorrow is to completely displace it from your mind. Many people’s itineraries are so filled up that they simply don’t have any room left for God. Living your life one day at a time is a lot simpler, because when we take a lot of things off of our plate, we have a lot more time to seek after the Lord.
Matthew 6:34 (KJB) Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
One of the main problems with constantly looking at tomorrow, next week, or even next month, is that those are events that God has not brought to pass in your life yet. The Apostle James warned the church about claiming that they were going to make all kinds of money tomorrow, but this kind of boasting is evil in the sight of God.
James 4:13-17 (KJB) Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
Proverbs 27:1 (KJB) Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
One of the main reasons why so many people in this world are not seeking God or even preaching the gospel is because they are overly concerned with what happens tomorrow or next week. Then, they get involved in the unending saga of trying to earn more money and store up for themselves all the things of this world. It really deceives people because they think that the more that they have, the more secure that they are going to be. But the truth is that it only pulls them further away from God, because they depend on themselves rather than on Him. Look at the birds in the sky who get by from day to day, and God provides for them all. But many people will trust in themselves rather than God, depending on their own ability to make riches, increase their savings accounts, acquire greater assets, attain a higher paying job, or focus on their 401k to retire on. Rather than trusting on the consolation of God, they are trusting in the consolation of riches.
Luke 6:24 (KJB) But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.
Genuine faith is to trust in God every single day, rather than trusting in yourself. This is perhaps one of the hardest lessons for a worldly person to learn. Trusting in God is understanding that He can provide for our needs every single day. Think about the Israelites who were camped out by the Red Sea. They didn’t know what they were going to do, but God did, and helped them escape out of Pharaoh’s hands. Rather than trusting in God’s provision, some people will chase after riches, which unrepanted of will ultimately ruin their relationship with God.
Matthew 6:24-33 (KJB) No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
You cannot serve God and Mammon, which is defined in the dictionary as material wealth. One of the greatest problems is that when you are seeking after money and riches, you are obviously not seeking after God. All my life I’ve heard of people who skipped out on church services or Bible study so they could go put in overtime on the weekend. But the amazing thing is that if they had trusted in God, He could have miraculously put a check in the mail for them, or made it show up some another way. The Apostle Paul was a tentmaker, and was providing for his basic needs, but he wasn’t setting His relationship with God on the back burner in order to go on slave at a job somewhere. Look at God’s miracle provision in the life of Solomon. The most important desire in his life was to be filled with the wisdom of God, and because of that, God gave him the riches of this world. He became one of the richest kings in history, but remember that he wasn’t seeking to become wealthy. He greatest desire was to be fully engaged in the things of God.
2 Chronicles 1:11-12 (KJB) And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king: Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.
Rather than allowing the mind to constantly think about tomorrow or next week, people must take the advantage today, to place their hearts and minds on God. Thoughts of tomorrow can bring worry, concern, anxiety, and all other types of thoughts. Rather than placing one’s minds on those things, place your minds on God and watch what happens. He knows those who are fervently seeking Him, and just like Solomon, He can provide for all the needs of His elect.
Psalms 37:4-5 (KJB) Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
Philippians 4:6 (KJB) Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Today is enough to think about, because as far as tomorrow is concerned, God is already there! Don’t worry about it, and commit your prayers to God, showing your trust and faith in His providence, by learning to take,……..
