2 Corinthians 7:8-9 (KJB) For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season. Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
There are two types of sorrow in this world, and you can tell the difference because it can be found in the sincerity of one’s heart. People will cry at funerals, but then they will go home and secretly rejoice that the person is dead. A child might be sent to their room and cry at the top of their lungs, but they will only do it to be heard by their parents, as they play a game on their game station. Many people are going to weep when they are cast into the lake of fire, but it won’t be driven by sorrow for what they did, but because they are going to be punished. Crocodile tears do not get people to heaven, Contrition does, and when you feel compunction in your heart, you will feel self-reproach and be ashamed of the wickedness that you have done towards God and others. Godly sorrow doesn’t need a public audience, and it is only when you feel this genuine type of pain deep inside of your heart, that you will ever truly repent of your sins.
