Making the Effort

1 Timothy 4:16 (KJB) Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

To obtain eternal life requires effort on your part, and those who say otherwise are complete deceivers. It takes effort to get up out of bed each morning. It takes effort to go outside and split some wood. It takes effort to eventually receive a paycheck at the end of the week. It also takes effort to get to heaven, because if you truly want to be there, it’s going to require humble submission to the will of God. That means mortifying the sinful deeds of the flesh. It means overcoming temptations. It means turning away from your sinful past. It means transforming into a new creature in Christ Jesus. It also means loving obedience to the teachings and doctrines of our faith! Each of us plays an active part in our own salvation, just as you play an active part in the things that you do with your day.

The Apostle warned Timothy to abide in the teachings of our faith, because when we become a doer of the Word, it is the proof of our love towards God, and the evidence of the true grace of God acting upon one’s heart. Jesus met us halfway at the cross, providing us with a portion of grace to become something new, and if you really want to get to heaven, you must meet Him the rest of the way, by walking every day in the doctrines of our faith, and saving yourselves from an untoward generation.
