Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
Many years ago a farmer told me that he had offered a couple of high school students some really good money if they came out to his place and spent a week picking the rocks out of his field. He was a wealthy landowner who could afford to reward them with a great paycheck after they completed the job. The day before, the farmer got everything ready and hooked up a dump trailer behind one of his tractors but the next morning, neither one of the young men bothered to show up. The farmer patiently waited until lunch time until he finally went back outside and did some work out in his barn. He waited for them again the next morning, but once again, they never showed up for work. He had promised them a nice reward for their services, but they just weren’t very interested in doing what was necessary to receive it.
This reminds me of the Christian life.
Scriptures clearly teach that heaven is a reward that will be given to the faithful in Christ Jesus. We have been given great and precious promises that the Lord will save us, but it requires doing what is necessary to reap that Everlasting reward.
Hebrews 6:7-12 (KJB) For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned. But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
A slothful person is extremely lazy, and many people who claim to be Christian have this same type of attitude in regards to the one true faith. I’ve always called it a lazy faith, and what I mean by that is that they want to be in heaven, but they are too lazy to do what is required to get there. It is through faith and patience that we inherit the promises of scripture, but genuine faith will have the actions of repentance, diligence, and humble obedience to God’s will. When we bring forth the works of obedience, we will be blessed by God, but those who are slothful and choose not to amend their ways will be punished. So although we are given promises in the scriptures, we must activate our faith in order to receive them. People receive a trophy when they finish a marathon, which is a reward given to them for enduring to the end. Likewise, the kingdom of heaven is an eternal reward, but to receive it, you must run to win!
Now, consider this for a minute. If your dad promises you that he will give you a brand new truck if you graduate from high school and then you quit school and rebel against him and run away from home, do you think that he owes you a brand new truck? That’s foolishness bordering on stupidity because there was really no effort on your part to do what was required in order to get it. This is the crux of a lot of the false Christianity out in the world today. People claim that they are going to be in heaven, but they really don’t have any desire to do what is required on their part to get there. They claim that they will be in heaven, while in all actuality, they haven’t yet heard those final words, “well done thou good and faithful servant!” Just like people who want to do nothing and get paid, massive forms of false Christianity want to do nothing and get to heaven. They judge themselves worthy of everlasting life, but that judgment isnt theirs to make, because it will happen when every knee bows before Him on that final Day of reckoning. God is a respecter of no one, and whether somebody claims to be a believer or not, every man will be judged by his own works. Blessings and rewards will come to those who do the will of God, but the slothful, impenitent, and those who rejected God’s forgiveness in Christ Jesus will be on the receiving end of His everlasting wrath.
Galatians 6:7-8 (KJB) Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
Romans 2:5-8 (KJB) But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
Can you imagine walking into a high school classroom and on the first day of school the teacher hands out all of the final grades for the entire school year! That sounds ludicrous doesn’t it, because the students are completely unlearned in the material, and never did what was required in order to achieve those grades. Another example, is do you really think an employer actually owes you two weeks pay when you didn’t even bother to show up for work? That’s ludicrous, but this is the heretical beliefs of numerous forms of false Christianity who actually preach a do-nothing to obtain something type of mentality. I really think that many will really believe that they will be in heaven and will be absolutely shocked when they are turned away. This is because false prophets have lied to them, and they were gullible enough to believe it because they never bothered to seek the will of God and the teachings of our faith.
Oh I am certain that many others are going to be absolutely furious that they can’t enter into heaven on Judgment Day, but it will be because they never truly repented and submitted to the will of God. Sure, they will claim that they had faith and that they truly believed, but if their faith never resulted in bringing forth the works of a redeemed lifestyle, then they were living in fantasyland. There are numerous warnings in the New Testament about being deceived in such a manner. What would be the point of warning the church if their salvation was already secure? Claiming to believe in the Lord Jesus without becoming a doer of the teachings of scripture is not only a complete fallacy, but without repentance will lead one’s soul into the Everlasting fires of damnation.
James 1:22-25 (KJB) But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
We are given the promise of eternal life, but some people are going to be so slothful in their faith that they simply won’t do what is required on their end to obtain it. I guess some people don’t want it that badly, just like the two young men who were too lazy to get out in the field and begin,……
