Jettison the Cargo

Good morning and welcome in everybody.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Back in the days of the old sailing ships, they had to travel through all kinds of different weather, but occasionally, the seas got extremely rough and the ship would get tossed around like a bobber on the waves of a windy lake. During these extreme situations, sometimes the captain would have to make the decision to jettison some of the cargo in order for his crew to be saved. During severe storms and heavy seas, the waves would toss the ship from side to side and could move a lot of the cargo around that was stored deep inside of its cargo holds. When this happened it greatly destabilized the vessel in the water, along with the minds of the ship’s crew, and unless they cast some of the freight overboard, it would capsize the ship and kill them all. Usually they would jettison goods such as grain, but sometimes they would throw live horses into the sea, just as was done in the calmer horse latitudes so they could conserve on drinking water. At any rate, in order to be saved during rough weather, they would have to lighten up the load somehow, by casting the heavy cargo into the depths of the sea.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Anybody who claims to be a follower of  Jesus will have to do the same type of thing, because in order for any of us to be saved eternally, we must cast off the works of darkness. The wages of sin is death and it wants to pull us right down into the abyss, but like captains of a ship, we have a serious choice to make. If you want to survive, then you must reach deep inside of the cargo hold of your own heart, and remove the entire load of sin. If you are going to save your vessel then you will have to forsake them all, by casting them away into the depths of the sea.

Proverbs 28:13 (KJB)  He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

To forsake means to deliberately abandon and discard something. For example, you might go through your freezer at home, and cast away everything that has spoiled and is not going to get eaten. You might toss garbage into a can underneath your kitchen sink, but then you completely forsake the rubbish by leaving by the curb to be hauled away to the dump. But this is the same attitude that one must possess in regards to sinfulness in their lives. In order to receive Mercy from God, one must actively turn away from their sinful lifestyles and forsake them. After all, Jesus taught to go and sin no more, and in order to fulfill that high calling of God, you will have to completely renounce the evil things that you used to be involved with.

2 Timothy 2:19 (KJB)  Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

Many people will try to cover up their sins by attempting to keep them hidden from view, but God sees every sin that has ever been committed by men and nothing is hidden from His sight. You cannot bury unconfessed sin deep inside your heart like a dog burying a bone out in the forest. Rather than eliminating them from your life, all you are doing is saving them up for the day of God’s wrath.

Romans 2:5-6 (KJB)  But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

One of the first steps towards obtaining Mercy from God is to be able to confess sin to others within the church, a process that has been completely abolished in many forms of false Christianity today. But one must remember that John the Baptist was listening to the confessions of people before he baptized them. To put it plainly, you need to get them off your chest by admitting them to a righteous and faithful man who can carry some of that burden for you, and begin the process of praying for you and the things that you are dealing with in your life.

James 5:16 (KJB)  Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

In order to receive mercy of God one must also forsake sin. Scripture is clear that some people will have been baptized into the Christian Life, and even had Holy Communion, but they still are not going to enter into heaven because they never really repented of their sinful lifestyles and committed themselves to the will of God. This is crucial for one’s own salvation! Jesus preached that one must repent or they will perish, and this applies to everyone including those who claim to be followers of Christ! Don’t be deceived, because there are going to be many people who will expect to enter into heaven because they did many wonderful things in the Name of Christ Jesus, but because of their refusal to turn from sins and submit themselves to the will of God, the Lord will deny them access to Paradise.

Matthew 7:21-23 (KJB)  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

To obtain Mercy, the sinner must show by their actions that they are willing to step off the wide road and begin the narrow walk on the path of Christ Jesus. You will never be able to change anything in your life, if you don’t make the decision to change. We must go through a transformation from sinners into Saints, but that process will require admitting your faults, renouncing them, and taking steps in a brand new direction.

Isaiah 55:7 (KJB)  Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

All of us, including myself, have sinned at one time or another, but if you really want Mercy from God you will need to own up to your own faults and come clean. Admit them, confess them, and forsake them, because the only way that you will be able to save your vessel, is by opening up the cargo hold of your heart, and making the firm decision, to….
