Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
For many years, I have made numerous trips to the recycle yard with pickup loads of things that had outlived their purpose. Sometimes it’s been a few bags of aluminum cans, an old washing machine, or even a junk car that was ready for the crusher. But whatever you decide to scrap out, you are basically putting an end to the purpose for which those things were created.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
A lot of people don’t think about it, but this is exactly what Jesus did for us when He died on the cross. He completely scrapped out the things concerning the Old Testament in order to replace them with a brand new covenant.
Jeremiah 31:31 (KJB) Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Just the other day, I happen to read a statement from a false prophet who was instructing Jews that they didn’t have to come to Christ Jesus in order to be saved eternally. No baptism required. No Holy Communion required. No repentance from dead works required. These are outright lies that are fabricated by the devil, who completely usurps our precious Lord Jesus and the purpose for which He came into this world. The Lord Jesus died as a propitiation for our sins, not only for the Jewish people but for the entire world. Those who do not convert to the teachings of the New Testament are outside of the grace of God, and well ultimately die in their sins.
John 8:24 (KJB) I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
Remember that the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ were all Jewish, but they converted to Christianity in order to be saved. Even the Apostle Paul had been a Jewish Pharisee in the past, but he also converted to Christianity and preached to others to do the same. No one kept the Old Testament perfectly, and you couldn’t be justified by it. It was put in place so that all of the world would become guilty in the sight of God, and the only way that any of us can receive mercy for our past sins is through faith in Christ Jesus and becoming converted to the teachings of the Christian faith.
Romans 3:19-20 (KJB) Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Many people are trying to work their way to heaven, not only Jewish people but people of different religions too. But one main thing that sets the Christian faith apart from all the others is that it is only by being converted to Christ Jesus can you obtain forgiveness with the Heavenly Father. For Jews, the Old Testament was set up for a period of time until the Lord Jesus came to the Earth and laid down His life for our sins on the cross. When He died, the things of the old covenant were completed and finished, and a brand new covenant with God was put into place. This New covenant is found throughout the teachings of the New Testament, and those who abide in them will be saved eternally by the grace of God.
Hebrews 8:7-10 (KJB) For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
No one kept the Old Covenant perfectly and through Christ Jesus it was abolished. But even when certain Pharisees believed in Jesus they wanted converts to Christianity to be circumcised according to the Old Testament. But the Apostle Peter taught them that the Judaic faith was a yoke that no one could bear, and it is not by the law but through the mercy of God in Christ by which we will be saved.
Acts 15:10-11 (KJB) Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.
When Jesus died on the cross, He completely freed us from the demands of the Old Testament, but for a Christian to go and get circumcised is to reject the purpose for which Christ died.
Galatians 5:1-4 (KJB) Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
Because nobody kept the Judaic faith perfectly, our precious Lord Jesus completely abolished it and started the New covenant of Christianity. A Christian cannot try to become a Jew, they must convert Jews to Christ just as Peter and the other Apostles were doing. True Jewishness is not found through circumcision of the flesh, it happens through circumcision of the heart through faith in Jesus Christ.
Philippians 3:3 (KJB) For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
Romans 2:28-29 (KJB) For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
Circumcision in the flesh is not what matters to God. What He really desires is that you focus on repenting from dead works, and walking in goodness, righteousness and Truth. Whether circumcised or not, the true Israel of God are those who have chosen to get forgiven in Christ, and become brand new creatures of obedience and love towards Him.
Galatians 6:15-16 (KJB) For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.
The Lord Jesus is the King of the Jews, and He laid down His own life for them so they could be forgiven for their sins. But the Christian Life cannot be combined with Judaism, because the things concerning the old covenant have been abolished in Christ. I guess I’m reminded of this fairly often because in a lot of ways, it’s just like taking another old item down to the recycle yard, in order to be…….
