The Horseradish Plant

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

I normally don’t get to eat it very often, but it’s something that I really enjoy as a special treat. I like horseradish, which is something that when I was a kid I would have found distasteful just like green beans. But now, I tend to be a man who likes jalapenos and chilies and other spicy foods, so it fits quite well into my regular menu. I was just reading the other day that it has been claimed by some that if it is left alone for a few years and in ideal situations, the horseradish plant can send its roots up to 10 ft deep into the ground! It has a very large and aggressive root system that spreads so easily that a lot of people treat it as an invasive species within their own gardens!

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Having deep roots are essential for a plant’s survival because not only do they hold it firmly in place but they also provide it with the nutrients that it needs in order to grow into maturity. Those who profess to follow Christ must be deeply rooted in the doctrines of our faith which are found throughout the King James Bible. We must be so well rooted in the teachings of Holy Scripture that no matter how much the world changes around us, we remain unmovable in the teachings of God’s Holy Word.

Colossians 2:6-7 (KJB)  As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

In order for a plant to produce fruit, it must have a good root system. Think about all the apples that are produced from a mature apple tree, one where its roots have been firmly established over a period of many years. Our root system must be firmly established in the teachings of Christ so that we can eventually bring forth fruit that is pleasing unto God. When we first become a Christian, we are like a tiny little seed that is just beginning to sprout, but in order to survive unto eternal life, we must mature in our faith and develop deep roots by faithfully abiding in the teachings of Holy Scripture.

John 15:3-8 (KJB)  Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

When we were born into this world it took a while for us to learn how to walk, and we had to practice every day until we eventually got to the point where we could get around on our own two feet. Well, the same is true of the Christian Life because we must learn what it truly means to be a Christian. We must understand the teachings of our faith if we actually are going to  “walk in Him”. But most people don’t devote very much time to learning the Christian life at all, and will only spend ten minutes listening to a sermon over the weekend. Children learn far more than that by going to public schools each weekday. To mature in our faith, it’s going to require diligently seeking God and devoting your time to learning His will and purpose for your life. But that is the crux of it all isn’t it, I mean, the dedication of one’s time to the things of God. Time is an important commodity, but most often it is used for everything else rather than growing in the riches of God’s wisdom. It really makes no sense to search after all the things of this world so ardently but none of them can provide you with eternal life! The Apostles wanted the church to be filled with the wisdom of God, and it must be a treasure in your heart that is worth more than anything else in this world.

Proverbs 8:10-11 (KJB)  Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

Proverbs 16:16 (KJB)  How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!

In order to walk as a Christian we must learn how to be a Christian so we can live up to the high expectations that God has for each of us. We must learn our faith, just like you would learn any other subject out in the world. If you really want to become a great mathematician, then you must diligently study math! If you want to become a good mechanic then you must diligently study mechanics! Likewise, in order to become a Christian we must diligently study the Christian faith! You must remember that the one true faith that was given to the Saints has not changed since it’s institution 2000 years ago, it is the world that has changed around us. False prophets have tried to adapt the teachings of Christ to an ecumenical worldview rather than conforming themselves to the teachings of the one true faith.

Jude 1:3 (KJB)  Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

Being well-rooted in the wisdom of God is extremely important because you cannot contend for the one true faith without a weapon! It is the Spiritual Sword of Scripture that we must raise up in battle against the onslaught of the enemies of Christ. Without the knowledge of the teachings of our faith is like going into a battle without any bullets! How can you possibly defend yourself in that kind of situation? We must be filled with the wisdom of God so that we are ready and prepared to resist the devil whenever and wherever situations present themselves.

1 Peter 5:8-9 (KJB)  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

Skyscrapers are built upon strong and secure foundations so that they cannot be moved. A huge Sequoia tree is held in place by its massive root system so that no matter what storms may arise, it cannot be moved. In order for any of us to be a successful follower of our Lord Jesus, we will need to become very well rooted in the teachings of scripture. So when you decide to reach out for a snack later on today, perhaps you can remember to take a few tips from,….
