The Highway to Heaven

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

I built my cabin in a lowland type area, and there have been a few years that it has gotten extremely muddy in the springtime. Rather than dragging a bunch of mud into the house, I would take a few pallets and throw them into the areas that had some standing water. It was a cheap fix but they sure would kept your feet high and dry until everything dried up. Actually the Romans did the same kind of thing years ago when they were building their roads. They would build them on top of mounds of dirt so they were higher than the surrounding terrain. Apparently, this is where the term “highway” actually came from, because the roads were built slightly elevated in order to keep travelers and other passerbys up and out of the mud.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

In this world, we are surrounded by a sea of iniquity that only wants to pull us  down into the mud. But if we truly are going to follow Jesus then we will need to get on higher ground by stepping onto Gods highway to Heaven

Proverbs 16:17 (KJB)  The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.

To become a Christian is an extremely high calling, and is by far, the greatest quest that anybody could ever strive after, as it is a commitment to the perfection of ones soul and to become pleasing unto God. Although many people are on the broad way that leads to destruction, when you choose to walk on the highway of the upright, it will lead to eternal life. Just like an elevated road, we need to rise above all of the sinfulness in this world and depart from iniquity.

2 Timothy 2:19 (KJB)  Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

Psalms 34:11-16 (KJB)  Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD. What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

Titus 2:11-12 (KJB)  For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

There are many different nations that are scattered across this entire Earth, but if they place their faith in Christ Jesus and repent of their sinfulness, they too can obtain eternal life. To become a Saint, one doesn’t need to be a certain nationality, only to have sincere faith in Christ, a fear of God, and a life filled with the works of righteous living.

Acts 10:34-35 (KJB)  Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

Romans 10:12-13 (KJB)  For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Departing from evil is mandatory in the Christian Life, and it happens through a process of mortification of the flesh and true repentance inside of the heart. To obtain Eternal life, sin must be renounced and cast out of our lives so that a new creature can emerge, one that is filled with the fruits of righteousness.

Romans 8:12-14 (KJB)  Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Galatians 6:7-8 (KJB)  Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

Like cleaning off your shoes when they get filled up with mud, sanctification is the process by which we make the personal effort to cleanse our hearts from the muddiness of sinful living.

2 Corinthians 7:1 (KJB)  Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

The Apostle teaches that Holiness is perfected through the fear of God, but in these latter days, many people don’t possess this quality at all. Many people who claim to be a Christian completely reject the doctrines of Eternal punishment which is one of the reasons why they live as complete reprobates according to the one true faith.

Romans 3:13-18 (KJB)  Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:.Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes.

It is knowing that God is perfectly just and will punish the wicked that men depart from iniquity. So, fear God and live.

Proverbs 16:6 (KJB)  By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

Proverbs 14:27 (KJB)  The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

Those who have no fear of God have no wisdom whatsoever.

Job 28:28 (KJB)  ……..Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Proverbs 3:7-8 (KJB)  Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

Proverbs 4:18 (KJB)  But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

So in order for people to get to heaven, they will need to get off of the wide road of darkness and onto the narrow path of Christ Jesus. Repentance from dead works and turning from sin is the key to our own salvation. We must renounce evil and step onto a brand new road, one that has been constructed out of the building blocks of righteous living and biblical truth. Departing from evil is the pathway of the upright, as they walk each day, on…….
