Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
Over the years I’ve built and flown quite a few RC airplanes, and found it to be a hobby that was not only cheap but extremely fun! But when you fly a fixed wing airplane, many times you don’t need to do anything once you have the plane all trimmed out. You can basically set down your controller for a few moments, and the plane will fly all by itself. But I’ve heard certain pilots claim that when they converted from flying airplanes to helicopters, it was extremely challenging, especially when it came to hovering in midair. One of the reasons why is because it takes one’s constant attention on the controls to keep it up during flight. Many of the things that you were trained to do instinctively while flying an airplane, will have to be completely relearned and replaced once you begin flying a helicopter.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Conversion is about changing over to something different, and at times it’s not going to be easy. All of us have been trained to live a certain way since our birth, but like converting from airplanes to helicopters, a Christian must convert from the teachings of this world to the teachings of Christ Jesus. We were born into this world once physically, but in order to be saved eternally we must be converted to the faith and be reborn Spiritually as a new child of God.
John 3:1-8 (KJB) There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Each of us have been born physically into this world through the flesh, but in order to enter into the kingdom of God, we must be born again Spiritually, which happens through conversion and faith in Christ Jesus. Conversion is basically changing from one form into another. I’ve always thought of it like an inverter that you might have in your pickup truck. When you open up the hood and hook it up to the battery, it converts 12 volt direct current to alternating current so you can use different types of tools. Well, in order to be used as an instrument of God we too must undergo a conversion. We must be reborn as a Spiritual child of God, and be converted to the teachings of the Christian faith.
Matthew 18:1-4 (KJB) At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
As the Lord teaches, you must be converted to enter the kingdom of heaven, but ultimately, Christian conversion will require being re-educated. Consider all the people who head off to some type of University to be rigorously trained in a specific field of study. Perhaps they grew up milking cows, but when they left home for college they eventually converted to a brand new profession and were transformed into an architect. Obviously you would have to admit that their new lifestyle is completely different from the activities they were involved with on the farm. That is because they went through a conversion through re-education in order to become something completely different. For many years, a lot of us were raised in the philosophies and teachings of this world, being trained to believe the same things that a lot of society does. But in order to truly live the Christian life, most of those things are going to have to be abandoned because they are outside of the teachings of Christ and the will of God. We will have to unlearn the worldly things that we learned wrong, and then relearn the things of God, not allowing ourselves to be corrupted by all of the traditions of this world.
Colossians 2:8-9 (KJB) Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
Think about a young man who was trained to play the trumpet in middle school, but now in high school, the band instructor wants him to transfer over and play the French horn instead! To do that is going to require a change from the things that he knows and is familiar with, to a different way of playing the instrument and learning new fingering positions.
Another example is that people in the United States drive on the right side of the road, something that we have been trained to do ever since we first got our driver’s license. But after driving for twenty years and then going over to the United Kingdom and trying to drive on the opposite side of the road can be very difficult, because it goes against the way that we were first trained to drive. All of us become accustomed to doing things a certain way, but when we become converted to the Christian faith things are going to need to change. We must be born again by being re-educated in the Spiritual things of God. Like an instruction manual for a pilot, the King James Bible is the instruction manual to heaven
1 Peter 1:23 (KJB) Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
Each of us must humbly change the way that we live our lives, and wholeheartedly submit ourselves to the will of God. At times it’s not going to be easy because the philosophies of this world have become so ingrained in our minds that it’s hard to let them go, but our own salvation demands that we are capable of doing this.
Remember that it’s going to require a conversion to get all the way up to heaven, just like converting from an airplane to a helicopter pilot, and taking off in…….
