Lame Excuse

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

A lot of us have managed our own businesses; even I have had the opportunity to hire quite a few people over the years. But sometimes it can be extremely difficult to get people to show up for work. Many times they will call in with some type of excuse, such as they aren’t feeling good, or their relatives are in town for a few days. But a lot of times people will come up with some type of lame excuse because the truth is that they really don’t want to be there.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

It’s easy to tell what’s really important to others because they will show up! But when the excuses start to fly, it only proves that certain things really weren’t that important to them at all.

Luke 14:16-27 (KJB)  Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: and sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper. And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

There are many things that can divert one’s attention away from God. Sometimes people can get so involved with busy work that they are completely oblivious that they need to sit down and focus on the things that are most important in their life. Beware when excuses start showing up about spending time with God, because during those moments something else has just become greater then spending some time with Him. Our Lord Jesus it’s not only God and creator of this world, but He is also a person too, one with whom we need to share a close relationship with. The dishes will get done eventually, so sit down and spend some time with the Lord. The garbage will be taken up to the dumpster soon enough, so sit down and spend some time with the Lord. The lawn will be there tomorrow, so sit down and spend some time with the Lord. The reason why many people don’t seek the things of God is because everything becomes more important in their lives than Him. There will always be work to do, but to grow closer to God requires setting aside the time that is needed to further our relationship with Him. Many people want to have quality time with their family, but what they really need most of all is some quality time with God.

Luke 10:40-42 (KJB)  But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Most of us have heard some pretty lame excuses when we were growing up in school. How many of you can remember certain students not handing in their homework because they said the dog ate it? Well if the dog got a hold of it, chances are it wasn’t really that important to them, otherwise they would have kept it in a safe place! Some people will make excuses in order to get out of something that they really didn’t want to do, and will use an excuse as a means to justify the reasons for not getting something done. For example, if your son doesn’t want to cut the lawn, he might give you an excuse that he has a sore leg. If a daughter doesn’t want to do the dishes, she might give you the excuse that she has suddenly developed an episode of carpal tunnel! Even when the Lord Jesus called out to men to preach the gospel, many of them were filled with excuses too.

Luke 9:59-62 (KJB)  And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Can you imagine preparing a huge feast for the weekend, complete with barbecue ribs, twice baked potatoes and cases of ice cold pop, but when you called up your friends and relatives, they had better things to do with their time then show up at your festivities? I guess in those moments you begin to know who genuinely cares about you. But this is exactly what people do to our precious Lord Jesus every single day, when other things become more important in their lives than spending time with Him. He must be our first and greatest love and our hearts must yearn to be near him again. Love seeks to be near our maker, and one of the worst things that you can do to Him is to come up with some type of,….
