Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
A lot of people head out to work each day and many times when they walk through the front door at their place of employment, they will punch a clock that stamps the time that they finally arrived. Back in November 1888, the very first Bundy clock was invented, which was created by jeweler Willard Le Grand Bundy, which really helped employers track hourly labor. Although it’s gone through modifications over the years, an employee could insert a key into a slot to punch out their individual identification time onto a roll of paper or some type of card, and after the hours were all tallied up, then they would finally get paid. Everybody puts a certain amount of trust in their employer that they will put a check in the mail for the hours that you have worked. After all, when they first interviewed you, they promised that if you did the things that they required of you, then they were going to reward you accordingly for your efforts.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Being a follower of Christ Jesus is the exact same thing, because He gives us a promise that He will save us, but obviously it depends on certain conditions being met. In order to eventually obtain the promise of eternal life, it’s going to require turning away from sin and walking each day in the perfect will of God.
Hebrews 6:12-15 (KJB) That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
A promise is a declaration that one will do or refrain from doing something specified. The scriptures clearly teach us that we are given the promise of eternal life, but in order to obtain that promise, there are certain things that we must do. We must repent of sins, and turn from darkness to the light in preparation for the future judgment that awaits us all. The Lord promises that He will save us, but you have to walk according to His will and purpose for your life, otherwise people are going to come up short of the eternal goal.
Hebrews 4:1-2 (KJB) Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
Our God wants to bless us and it’s really no different than being promoted at a job. If your aim is to please and obey your employer, then more than likely they will raise you up to a higher rank or position. When you do a good job at work, it can result in a larger paycheck, greater responsibilities, and even some bonuses. But just like an earthly job, it’s going to require putting forth a diligent effort in order to obtain the promises that God has waiting for us. God is a rewarder, but if people choose not to repent and walk according to God’s will then they certainly will not reap the promise of everlasting life. This is because it is a reward for the faithful, not for the slothful.
Matthew 7:21-23 (KJB) Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
I am fully convinced of the blessings of God as I have seen them come to pass many times in my life, but it takes faith and patience to inherit the promises of God, and faith is believing that God is going to reward you for humbly submitting to His will.
Hebrews 11:6 (KJB) But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
God told Abraham that He would bless him, and He wants to do the same thing towards us. We simply must trust that He is going to do that, and then submit ourselves completely unto Him. Like eventually getting a paycheck for your efforts, God will reward us by being a faithful doer of the work.
James 1:21-25 (KJB) Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Obviously we can’t get to Heaven by works alone because we must come to Jesus Christ and get forgiven for our sins, but faithful works of obedience and repentance are commanded throughout the New Testament, and those who think otherwise are fools.
Matthew 7:24-27 (KJB) Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
So if you want to get a paycheck from work, then there are certain things that you will be required to do, and to obtain the promise of eternal life, certain conditions will have to be met to finally receive the prize. Have faith in God and serve Him obediently from the heart, and He shall bring it to pass, just make sure to keep busy about the things of our Heavenly employer, and continue to keep punching,……
