Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from The Book of Matthew.
Matthew 25:14-30 (KJB) For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money. After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
A talent was the unit of weight of gold or silver that represented a massive fortune, and as I’ve always said, if you can be faithful with $100, you will be faithful with 100,000. Consider a dad who gives his son an inexpensive used car when he gets his driver’s license, but over the next few years his dad watches to see how he takes care of it. If they are good with it, there is a good chance that he might pick up a brand new car for him in the future. The point is that God is watching if we are going to be faithful with the things that He has provided.
Luke 16:10-13 (KJB) He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own? No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
The parable of the talents is also mentioned in the Book of Luke chapter 19, but we must remember the atmosphere in which the Lord told this story. He was actually visiting with a wealthy man at his home, and the topic that they were talking about was the usage of finances.
Luke 19:1-10 (KJB) And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house. And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Many people really don’t consider the kind-hearted thing that Zacchaeus did with a large part of his income. He gave away half of his goods to the poor, which would be the equivalent of a billionaire giving away 500 million dollars. So again, you cannot serve God and Mammon. Moses could have inherited the treasures of Egypt, but he walked away from it all in order to seek after God. The Apostles forsook their own jobs to follow after the Lord Jesus. But how many people could actually do this today? Not many, because their hearts are more concerned with the accumulation of personal wealth, rather than the accumulation of Heavenly treasures.
Luke 18:22-30 (KJB) Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich. And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. And they that heard it said, Who then can be saved? And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee. And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake, Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.
Whenever you warn others about the accumulation of wealth, many people will begin to squirm in their chairs, simply because it is a topic that a lot of people want to avoid. But the love of money is the root of all evil and is by far, a more powerful and greater addiction than any drug problem that you will ever find in this world. In order for the heart of man to change, he must first take a look into his own financial dealings and determine what he has done with the wealth that has been given to him by God. God rewards our financial stewardship, whether it’s a little, or a lot.
Luke 12:33-34 (KJB) Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
When it comes down to it, you can take the wealth that God has given you and bury it in an Earthly bank account, or you could open up your heart and do something good with it while you have the opportunity. God will reward those who give alms secretly to the poor, because in that act you are depositing your treasures into the kingdom of heaven, rather than grabbing a shovel and,……..
