Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
If one of your children walked into the house one afternoon and told you that there was a bear standing up on the road, would you believe them? Would their testimony be so convincing that it caused you to rise up from your chair, grab your camera and then go take a picture? If your next door neighbor came running over to your house and told you that they had just seen a funnel cloud approaching in the darkened skies above, would you believe their testimony enough that it caused you to take all of your children and quickly go down into the basement?
This reminds me of the Christian life.
A lot of people have claimed that in a courtroom, it only takes a single believable witness to provide enough credible evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross and died and was buried, but after He rose from the grave, He was seen and identified by over 500 people! The Resurrection of Christ Jesus is not a mere story, it is a historical fact of history, and there is so much testimonial evidence surrounding this event, that if it were given to a jury somewhere, it would be far more than what was actually required to convict somebody of a crime beyond a reasonable doubt.
1 Corinthians 15:1-11 (KJB) Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.
There are many people who will hear the story of the resurrection and rejoice for a short period of time, but then go on their way and completely forget about everything that they just heard. In order to enter into a saving relationship with the Lord Jesus, we must keep in memory the things that we have learned from scripture. A lot of people claim that when they get older they tend to be more forgetful, but the one thing that you never want to forget are the doctrines and teachings of our precious Lord Jesus. This is because they are the roadmap to our own salvation and the Spiritual compass to eternal life.
1 Timothy 4:13-16 (KJB) Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
When you forget about the teachings of Scripture, you are forgetting the path that Jesus wants you to walk on, and that path must be so familiar to us that it’s like walking out each day to retrieve the mail from out of the mailbox. It becomes a daily routine that we have committed to memory, and has become so deeply etched into our minds that it would be extremely doubtful that you would ever forget the way there. But when people begin to distance themselves from a daily intake of Holy Scripture, they begin to starve themselves spiritually, and they will slowly begin to forget what God expects them to be doing with their lives. To be successful in the Christian Life requires a daily commitment to God, and remembering each day the things that we must do, in order to eventually obtain the prize of eternal life.
James 1:21-25 (KJB) Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
The Apostle Paul was a man who was filled with faith, and when he got forgiven for his past sins, his life went through an abrupt change. Receiving God’s mercy was such an incredible event in his life that it resulted in incredible works towards God! Rather than persecuting the churches, he began planting them instead. To receive God’s grace in vain actually means that it doesn’t produce the change in one’s life that is required to get to heaven. Even the Apostle Peter denied the Lord Jesus three times, but when he got forgiven, look at what he did with his life! Those who are walking in the true grace of God will be filled with works that are meet for repentance. Without these grace-activated works in one’s life, then you are only fooling yourself, because the faith that you profess isn’t really faith at all. Genuine faith is proven by our actions, and will be filled with the outward evidence of works towards our merciful God..
James 2:17-24 (KJB) Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
So don’t forget what you have heard, because the events surrounding the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus are a historical event that cannot be denied. There is a myriad of evidence that would convince any jury in this world to come to the final conclusion that Jesus died on the cross and rose from the grave, bringing in a unanimous verdict, and,……
