The Recruiter

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

Many times the first image that we have of a recruiter is a man sitting behind a desk at a recruiting station, trying to convince people to join a specific branch of the armed forces. Their job entails talking to a lot of people and screening potential candidates as they guide them through the enlistment process and the things that need to be done in order to meet the high standards of the recruiting goals. Recruiters have been known to put in long hours, and are regularly involved in numerous outreaches such as visiting high schools, colleges, and many other public events.

This reminds me of the Christian Life

A recruiter is someone who engages in finding and gaining new members into some type of organization, cause or duties, but that is actually very similar to what a man of God is called to do. This is because when the disciples of Christ Jesus were walking around in communities, they were recruiting people to preach the gospel!

2 Timothy 2:1-2 (KJB)  Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

Army recruiters understand all too well that it can be very hard to find new recruits, ones who are willing to leave their homes, families and occupations in order to become a part of the military. The same is also true of finding men who will make a full time commitment to being discipled and preaching God’s Word.

Luke 14:25-26 (KJB)  And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

It is oftentimes for this very reason that many men won’t sign up as a labourer for the Lord

Luke 9:59-62 (KJB)  And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Matthew 9:37 (KJB)  Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;

In order to recruit others into the Christian faith, your love for the Lord Jesus will have to outweigh everything else in this world, and those who are capable of doing this shall be rewarded 100 fold, even in this lifetime!

Mark 10:28-30 (KJB)  Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

Jesus basically taught his disciples to recruit others and disciple them! After all, it seems that everywhere that He went, He was trying to get men to go out and preach!

Matthew 28:19-20 (KJB)  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Mark 16:15 (KJB)  And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Recruiters will try to get men to join up for military service, but our precious Lord was doing the exact same thing by recruiting His original disciples, and then teaching them how to go out and fish for others!

Matthew 4:18-20 (KJB)  And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.

In order to get certain things done you will need to recruit some good helpers! For example, when a farmer is ready to harvest his potatoes, he might recruit a bunch of high school students to help him out. When a professional basketball team wants to win more games, they will recruit some better and more seasoned players for the roster. Likewise, in order for the gospel to be promulgated, you will need to recruit some faithful and loyal men who are ready to preach!

Romans 10:14-15 (KJB)  How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

Look at all of the Epistles that the Apostle Paul wrote to the church, instructing men in the faith and the high calling of God. His goal was to get men out there to preach, just as he instructed Timothy and Titus to do. But think about all the fruit that he must have now, because even through his writings today, faithful men have believed the words that he spoke, repented of their sins, and chose to become a laborer for Christ Jesus. The Apostle wanted to preach the gospel in the regions beyond, and 2000 years later, his desire has certainly been fulfilled many times over!

2 Corinthians 10:15-16 (KJB)  Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men’s labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly, To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s line of things made ready to our hand.

Preaching the things of God’s Kingdom is something that God calls all men to do, and although you might only know that Jesus died for us on the cross, that’s a good place to start! Preach only the things that you know from the teachings of scripture so you don’t begin heading off into heretical and false teachings. In the very beginning, I used to hand out the King James Bible to people that I met walking down the street! Hand out flyers, preach the Word, and persuade other like-minded men to do the same.

It is our duty to convince others as best as we can to join up in the high calling of Christ Jesus. Men of God are Spiritual soldiers, and like a military man sitting behind his desk, you will need to convince others, by regularly engaging in the same activities as,….
