A Waste of Space

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

One spring, my family asked me if we could plant a bunch of fruit trees on our property. I like fruit trees because it tends to be a lot less work than tending to a garden, so after a week of deciding what we are going to purchase, we put in an order for a group of them, such as pears, plums, cherries and apple trees. We bought the trees that were already about 5 ft tall, and spent a day planting them up around our garden area. But the years started to pass by and nothing was growing at all, so I asked my son how long it was going to take. He told me he wasn’t certain, but to have a little patience. After waiting four more years there was still no progress at all, so because of this, I cut all them down so I could plant some other things in their place.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Whenever you plant something in the ground, such as a fruit tree or tomato plants, you expect them to eventually bear fruit. But sometimes people will begin the Christian Life but for some reason or another will never go on to fruition. Rather than abiding in the faith and being faithfully obedient to the will of God, they will walk off on their obligations to Christ Jesus. At that point, all they are good for is to be cut down, because they are unproductive, unfruitful, and a complete waste of space.

Luke 13:6-9 (KJB)  He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

You never want to begin the Christian Life and not complete it, because you are abandoning the greatest duty that one could ever possess in this world. But God knows everybody’s heart, and when people treat Him in this manner, just like a gardener pruning His trees, He’s going to cut off all of these fruitless branches.

John 15:1-6 (KJB)  I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

The only thing that people like these will be remembered for is their complete disobedience and abandonment of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 3:8-9 (KJB)  Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their’s also was.

One of the main reasons that people will walk off on the will of God is because their love will become greater for the things of this world, rather than the high calling of Christ Jesus. They will become self-willed, rather than seeking to do the will of God. God rewards obedience to His purpose, and when you keep His teachings, I know that you will be rewarded.

Luke 8:11-15 (KJB)  Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

Just like removing dead branches from your fruit trees, God will cut off every branch that rebels against His kindness, and rejects the path of repentance.

Romans 11:21-22 (KJB)  For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

Judas walked off on Christ, and lost his own salvation. Esau did the same thing, and was outside of God’s grace permanently. Be forewarned that you cannot mock God in such a manner and get away with it.

Hebrews 12:16-17 (KJB)  Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

Hebrews 6:7-8 (KJB)  For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

Some people are not going to last in the Christian Life, and at some point will decide to focus on other things that have become more important to them instead. But just remember this, God is not mocked and those who treat His grace in such a frivolous manner will be cut off and cast into the fire. God will plant another tree in its place, because all they were, was,….
