The Root Cellar

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

For over 25 years, I’ve lived out in the woods without any type of modern day refrigeration. I always wanted to build a small storage building and cut some ice from the lake for the summer, but there is usually only a few weeks of extremely warm weather, and it didn’t really warrant all the extra time involved in doing it. Incredibly enough, there have been quite a few times that we found large pieces of ice in the last week of June that were buried underneath branches and leftover sawdust from cutting wood during the winter. We quickly dug them out and put them into one of our coolers to enjoy some nice cold pop or some homemade lemonade. But if you really want to preserve food naturally, many people in our area will build a root cellar, which provides not only a cool place to get out of the heat on a hot summer day, but effectively preserves food by using the Earth’s temperature. Sometimes they can be very simplistic, almost like a man cave that is dug into the side of a hill where you can preserve root crops, vegetables, fruits and other canned goods. It’s been claimed that people have used these for thousands of years and were used quite commonly in colonial times. They are still in use today, especially in off-grid situations, but their popularity has seen a great decline due to modern forms of refrigeration. Root cellars are a great way to preserve food, by keeping it safe and protecting it from harm.

This reminds me of the Christian Life

To preserve something means to protect it from harm or decay, or keep it safe from injury or being damaged. Like preserving food in a root cellar, God stands on the side of the righteous, preserving their souls until eternal life, but all of the wicked shall ultimately perish.

Psalms 31:23 (KJB)  O love the LORD, all ye his saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.

God is not going to save sinners who refuse to repent, but like rotten food, they will ultimately perish in their own corruption. That is not God’s first choice, because He wants all men to come to a place of repentance. But when people continue to abide in their sins, they are going to die in their sins whether they claim to be a Christian or not. Repentance is not optional for those who claim to be followers of Christ, it is mandatory for anyone who desires to enter into the kingdom of heaven. God can protect us and preserve us from everlasting harm, but we will have to first choose the path of faith, obedience, Godly fear, and humble submission to His will.

Psalms 37:28 (KJB)  For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.

Many people who claim to be Christian are complete reprobates to the teachings of our faith, and the will of God. Over and over again the Apostles and disciples of Christ warned the church to not believe a lie! If a person’s heart never goes through a status of transformation and heartfelt change to become obedient to God, then the only thing that they possess is hypocrisy that is clothed in the religious garments of their own unrepented iniquities.

Galatians 6:7-8 (KJB)  Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

Have you ever had certain types of food in your home that became rotten and spoiled? What did you do with them? Did you keep them or did you throw them away? God is not going to save the impenitent, nor will He preserve the wicked, but will cast them away instead.

Matthew 13:47-50 (KJB)  Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

In this world there are two different types of Christianity, one that is filled with pride, rebellion, insubordination and disobedience, and the other is filled with meekness, humility, obedience, and submission to the will of God. When you preserve food, do you pick out the nicest ones that are fresh and ripe, or are you going to preserve a bunch of rotten apples? The Lord is going to preserve those who truly love and obey Him, but whether you profess to be a Christian or not, all of the impenitent shall be destroyed.

Psalms 145:19-20 (KJB)  He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them..The LORD preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy.

God will save and protect those who depart from evil.

Proverbs 16:17 (KJB)  The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.

2 Timothy 2:19 (KJB)  Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

Great troubles will come upon evildoers, but the obedient of Christ Jesus shall be saved.

Psalms 32:7 (KJB)  Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.

Psalms 97:10 (KJB)  Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.

Psalms 121:7-8 (KJB)  The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

In order to preserve wheat, you must remove the chaff which is the lightweight husk that surrounds the grain. The kernels can store for decades, but the chaff is inedible and will cause things to spoil. Likewise, the Lord will preserve all of His faithful Servants, but all of the wicked shall be destroyed.

Matthew 3:12 (KJB)  Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Those who trust in the Lord, are going to trust in His teachings, and those who humbly submit to His will are going to be preserved unto eternal life.

Psalms 16:1 (KJB)  Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.

So however you preserve things in your home, whether it’s freezing, drying or canning, remember the quality of the food that you are saving. If food is moldy, rotting, and completely inedible, I highly doubt that any of us would try to preserve it, by taking it out to,….
