The Pre-flight Checklist

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

How many times have you gotten ready to depart on an extended fishing trip, but before starting up the truck, you went over your entire checklist just to make sure that you didn’t forget anything? Well, when a pilot gets ready to leave on an airplane, it is imperative for him to go through a complete pre-flight checklist to ensure the safety of both him and his passengers. Over the years many dangerous situations have arisen on flights because of a pilot’s own complacency. Sometimes they can get in a rush, or try to take shortcuts by deviating from standard procedures. Their attention can be distracted by other things going on around them, and they can forget about completing certain parts of the checklist. Sometimes, because of their many years of flawless flights, they can become overconfident in their abilities and because of this, it can cause them to treat the flight checklist without the serious attention that it demands.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

The teachings of Holy Scripture are very much like a PreFlight checklist, because they are something that we must continue to look over every single day of our lives. The more that you skip checklists on a plane, the more you are headed for disaster, and this is why we must continue a daily routine of self examination to make sure that we are abiding in the will of God. Just like a pre-flight checklist, we must make sure that our hearts are functioning properly, by walking in humble submission to the high calling of God. Only then can we be prepared to launch off from this Earth, and get all the way to our final destination in the Heavenly skies above.

1 Timothy 4:16 (KJB)  Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

A pilot must pay great attention to their checklist, because it can prevent potential dangers from happening during their flight. In many ways, Timothy was a lot like a pilot because he had been chosen to guide the church and to keep them safe from harm. But in order to get to heaven requires preparation beforehand, by giving due diligence to the teachings of Scripture. But occasionally a pilot will procrastinate and begin to neglect doing their checklists, even in full knowledge that negative and serious consequences can happen because of it.

Matthew 25:1-13 (KJB)  Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Most people check the oil on their vehicles before leaving on a long trip across the country. Other people have trained themselves to check the oil every time that they fill up with gasoline. But each day, all of us need to keep filling ourselves up with the Holy Spirit, which is found throughout the teachings of Scripture. They have been put forth by men filled up with the Spirit of God, so that we can be prepared for any eventualities that might happen in the future.

2 Peter 1:20-21 (KJB)  Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Just like a flight list, going over scripture regularly is critical for our own safety because it can correct us before committing any human errors.

2 Timothy 3:14-17 (KJB)  But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Hebrews 4:12 (KJB)  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

It is absolutely imperative that pilots remember to complete their checklists, and to keep in mind that they were prepared by people who spent their years flying planes long before they did. They gathered together their knowledge of the plane and their experience, and then handed it down to younger pilots so they could be safe wherever they went. But you cannot adhere to precautions when you neglect to look at the list. A Christian cannot avoid the dangers of their own soul if they refuse to educate themselves in the training manual of God. This is where many people are going to come up short of eternal life. The teachings of scripture were written to us thousands of years ago by men that were chosen by God to hand down the teachings of our faith, and we must play close attention to their warnings and guidance that are found throughout the teachings of the King James Bible.

1 Thessalonians 2:13 (KJB)  For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

Some people are going to come short of eternal life, simply because they never took the time and effort to complete the checklist of the things that God wanted them to do. Sometimes professional pilots will complete three to four checklists every single day, which is the same type of routine that we must possess, by keeping Spiritual directives in the forefront of our minds.

For those who want to make it all the way to eternal life, it’s really no different than getting ready to take off from a runway, because just like a pilot, you will need to make sure that you have done everything that is necessary to prepare beforehand, by going over the entire,……
