Abandoning the Conscience

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from the book of 1st Timothy.

1 Timothy 4:1-2 (KJB)  Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

When we are baptized into the Christian life, we become a brand new child of God, and just like children go through a process of education in this world, we begin to be educated in Spiritual things by men of God who are over us in the Lord. But sometimes when people head off to college to obtain a degree, they will reject the things that they have been taught, and drop out of school in order to go in a completely different direction. Likewise, there will be people who have been educated in the teachings of our faith, but rather than abiding faithfully in what they have learned, they will depart from their conscience instead. The conscience is the inner faculty that helps us distinguish between right and wrong, and as a Christian, it is something that is formed inside of our minds from the teachings of Holy Scripture.

Consider this for a moment if you would.

When you were playing with your little brother and then angrily shoved him to the ground, did your dad yell at you and send you to your bedroom? At that moment your conscience was being formed as to what is right and wrong, at least in the eyes of your dad anyway. Sometimes when people are in high school, they have to go to detention because they got into a fight in the hallway with another student. At that moment your conscience was being formed as to what is right and wrong in the sight of the school faculty members. The same thing happens when we become a Christian, because the conscience is being formed by the rebukes and corrections that are found throughout the teachings of Holy Scripture.

2 Timothy 3:14-17 (KJB)  But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

In order for our conscience to develop, we will have to endure any chastening that comes from God.

Hebrews 12:5-11 (KJB)  And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Some people will get tired of being corrected by their dad and choose to run away from home instead. Sometimes a wife will refuse to obey her husband and depart him and divorce him. But there will be people who do the exact same thing to God. They will get baptized into the faith and even have Holy Communion. They will grow steadily in the teachings of scripture and develop a strong conscience between what is right and what is wrong. But for some reason or another, they will choose to go against their own conscience, and reject the path of humble obedience to God. This is bad news, because they have the knowledge of God, but then willfully rebel against the Lord Jesus who shed His own blood to save them.

Hebrews 10:26-31 (KJB)  For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

When people treat God’s loving grace in this manner, they completely defile their own conscience, and don’t deserve to be in heaven anyway.

Titus 1:15-16 (KJB)  Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

Instead of sailing smoothly by continuing to walk faithfully in the will of God, these people will completely shipwreck their faith.

1 Timothy 1:19 (KJB)  Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

When someone is educated in the teachings of scripture, and then turns away from it, the consequences from God will be far worse for them than they ever knew it before. It’s one thing to turn from darkness to light, but those who mock the kindness of God and turn from light back to darkness deserve the lake of fire.

2 Peter 2:20-22 (KJB)  For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

1 Timothy 1:5 (KJB)  Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

One of the commandments of God is to make sure that you keep a good conscience, which is done by faithfully abiding in the Spiritual education that you have received. But don’t be deceived, because cruelty and open rebellion to God is going to incur His wrath. Be very careful to keep yourselves in the love of God, because those who choose to walk away from obedience to His will are only betraying the Truth, forsaking their faith, and,……
