Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, and talk about the qualities of meekness.
The Apostle Paul was an incredibly meek man, and when you met him he was extremely humble, unpretentious and low in rank. Meekness is a quality that we want to put on in our daily lives.
Colossians 3:12 (KJB) Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness…..
Titus 3:2 (KJB) To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.
God rewards meekness.
Psalms 149:4 (KJB) For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.
Our Lord Jesus is perfectly meek.
Matthew 11:28-29 (KJB) Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Even though the Lord Jesus created everything in this world, He is extremely lowly. When He came to the Earth, He appeared just like everybody else. In fact, the only way to identify Him when they came to take Him away, was to be kissed by Judas.
Matthew 26:48-49 (KJB) Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.
But although we are supposed to seek meekness, that doesn’t change the fact that the Apostle Paul wrote some strongly worded letters to the church. Although he appeared very meek in presence, he warned them that if he had to come in there and set them straight, that he would certainly do so.
2 Corinthians 10:1-11 (KJB) Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s. For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed: That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters. For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible. Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.
1 Corinthians 4:19-21 (KJB) But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power. For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power. What will ye? shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love, and in the spirit of meekness?
Consider the gentleness of our precious Lord Jesus but yet in His extreme wrath, He went into the temple and scourged the people.
John 2:13-17 (KJB) And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise. And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.
Another example is Moses who has been referred to as the meekest of all men, but yet when he came down out of the mountain, his anger waxed so hot that he threw down and broke the tablets of the Ten Commandments!
Exodus 32:16-19 (KJB) And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables. And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp. And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear. And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses’ anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.
So we learn here that there is a place for meekness, but wrath is going to be the ultimate outcome for those who choose to live in complete rebellion and disobedience to the will of God. Even a dad can be very tender-hearted, but you certainly don’t want to provoke him to anger.
Hebrews 12:9-11 (KJB) Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
There is a time when wrath and displeasure will be warranted, but always remember that the Spirit of the Lord is first gentle, kind-hearted, and filled up with……
……Meekness
