The Largest Paintbrush

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Every so often, people will have to do a paint job on the exterior of their home, and will begin digging out the scrapers and sandpaper to loosen up all of the old paint. But occasionally, when you are finally ready to begin putting on a fresh new coat, you will quickly realize how big of a job that it is going to be. When you start looking through the garage, you cannot find a large enough paint brush for the task. So you will get into your vehicle and run down to the hardware store to purchase a nice big paintbrush, one that is suitable for getting the entire job done quickly.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

There are numerous sins that can be committed with others in a church, but oftentimes it’s going to take a lot bigger paint brush to cover them all up. The bigger the charity that you possess in your heart, the more forgiving that you are going to be with others, because charity will cover up a multitude of sins.

1 Peter 4:8-10 (KJB)  And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. Use hospitality one to another without grudging. As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

When your heart is filled up with fervent charity, you will be extremely passionate, forgiving, and possess a sincere and intense warmth of tender feelings.

1 Peter 1:22 (KJB)  Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:

Proverbs 10:12 (KJB)  Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

The Christian life is about learning to go and sin no more, but occasionally someone might sin against others. When this happens, and they humbly confess their faults to you, we must be forgiving with them, just as Christ Jesus has been toward us.

Matthew 18:21-35 (KJB)  Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

This entire passage has to do with forgiveness, and the money is very symbolic of each of our sin debts. The servant was forgiven for a lot of debt, but he refused to show that same compassion to those who were indebted to him. When people are filled with a contrite and penitent heart, it is charity towards them that will cover up all of their sins. God wants us to be incredibly merciful with others, filled up with forbearance and long-suffering to wash away all of their sins.

Colossians 3:12-14 (KJB)  Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

When we speak about “bowels of mercies,” it means to be forgiving with others from the depths of your heart. We need to be merciful with them in their time of need, as a good steward of the riches of God’s grace. After all, 70 * 7 is quite a bit of forgiveness.

Micah 7:18-19 (KJB)  Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

When people confess their faults and desire to be reconciled, you can begin to pray for them, which is a part of the healing process.

James 5:16 (KJB)  Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Just like the king’s servant, when people cry out for mercy we need to be forgiving with them.

Matthew 6:14-15 (KJB)  For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Matthew 5:7 (KJB)  Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

So although there can be numerous sins that are committed in the church, be merciful with each other as the Lord has been towards you. Take the gift that you have been given and give it to others in their time of need. It takes a big heart that is filled with fervent charity in order to cover up a lot of sin, just like reaching into the bucket, and pulling out,…..
