Honour the king

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from 1st Peter

1 Peter 2:17 (KJB)  Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

Many times when people go into a courtroom they will address the judge as “your honor”, but did you know that this is the same way that you are supposed to treat all men in this world? It doesn’t matter who they might be, or what place of authority they might be in, whether they are a king, a president, the poor man down the street, or or a husband. To honor all men is to treat them respectfully. But we are in a day and age when people who are in high places of authority are completely disrespected all the time, and it comes from those who claim to be followers of Christ. The Lord Jesus is the creator of Heaven and Earth, but yet even when He was brought before Pontius Pilate, He still treated him respectfully for the governorship position that had been granted to him by God.

Mind you, there have been some absolutely ruthless leaders over the centuries, but you must remember that God wants all men to come to a place of repentance.  Each of us have sinned at one time or another, including people in high places of authority, but when you treat them honorably for the position that God has placed them in, it’s possible to turn them to the truth in Christ Jesus.

James 5:19-20 (KJB)  Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

This was the same hope that the Apostle Paul had for King Agrippa.

Acts 26:27-29 (KJB)  King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest. Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian. And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.

God wants us to pray for those who are in authority, because it is very possible that they could convert and repent of their sins.

1 Timothy 2:1-4 (KJB)  I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

God wants us to honor those who are in places of temporal authority in this world, because ultimately these places were created by our precious Lord Jesus who is ruler over them all.

Colossians 1:16-18 (KJB)  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

Sometimes, high places of authority are not going to make the right decisions, simply because they are still in a state of unbelief, and in order for them to be saved eternally, they must come to a place of repentance with the Lord Jesus, just like everybody else. But we must always remember that Jesus died for kings and rulers too, just as He did for each one of us. Just because of their position, they hold no greater place of shame than anyone else, because all of us are guilty sinners in the sight of God. I don’t care how wretched or how misguided Earthly leaders might be, Christians must sincerely pray for them all, that God would grant them repentance, and open up their hearts to His will.

Proverbs 22:11 (KJB)  He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.

If you have the ability to turn others to the will of God, no matter what place of authority they might be in, the better off it will be for those who serve underneath them as their subjects. Many people cannot understand authority in this world because they have never wielded authority. Those who have authority, no matter who they are, will have to suffer their own consequences with God for whatever decisions that they make, whether right or wrong.  But we must honor them, because many times they need help too, much more than people can ever imagine. They carry a huge burden upon themselves, that many times is completely overlooked by the public. People find it easy to quickly disparage and speak evil about their leaders, rather than looking at the sinful behaviors that they are committing every single day. Sin must be rebuked and without partiality, but it must come from a sincere heart, and be meant for the purpose of bringing others to repentance.

Titus 3:1-6 (KJB)  Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

So why do people go out of their way to dishonor Earthly rulers and kings and then they go out and dishonor the teachings of the Christian Life? It’s because of their own complete hypocrisy. It’s simply wanting to find fault with others but they choose not to  look at the huge log that is in their own eye. Whenever possible, and as much as they will grant you their ear, we must try to convince earthly authorities towards the will of God, because if they humbly submit to His purpose, things will be far better for them in the future, and they will walk in the blessings of God. Pray for them, honor them, and obey them, for they deserve that treatment just like any other man in this world.

Romans 13:7 (KJB)  Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

Proverbs 24:21 (KJB)  My son, fear thou the LORD and the king:…..

Titus 3:1 (KJB)  Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

Romans 12:10 (KJB)  Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

Joseph found favor in the sight of Potiphar. Joseph found favor with the leaders in prison. Joseph found favor in the sight of Pharaoh. Whatever wrongs might be committed against us, we must strive to serve and obey authority in this world, showing meekness unto all men. When we do, God’s will can come to pass because of it.

So do good, not just to your neighbors, but towards your leaders as well. Pray for their souls and the commission that they have received, and always remember, to…….

………Honour the king
