During the American Civil War a battle ensued which would completely change the way that naval ships were constructed. Up until that point in history, the main material used in the creation of ships was wood, which, while plenty good for most ships of that era, could be destroyed by a barrage of cannon balls, or set on fire. But around the year 1862 the first “ironclad” warships were created, in the USS Monitor on the side of the Union, and the CSS Virginia for the Confederacy. These two ships met in what has become known as the Battle of Hampton Roads, but after a four hour battle in which each ship delivered round after round of cannon fire at the other with little to no effect, the battle ended in virtual draw. They were both armored far too much that the ammunition that was used just did nothing to affect the other, and it was this battle that completely changed naval warfare.
Armor, whether it be like armor used on those warships, or combat armor for a soldier, both share the same purpose in that armor protects and preserves the integrity of what is inside.
I once did a bit of winter camping, which in some locations of the world may not be so difficult, but here in Minnesota during the time that I did it the temperatures regularly reached -20 to -30 degrees below zero, and while this was pretty extreme, I remained completely warm because I took the precaution to “armor up” with many layers. I would put on a pair of snow pants, a couple pair of heavy wool socks, I would remove the liners out of my boots and put those on as well. I had two sleeping bags which I would stick one inside the other, and after crawling into them with all of my gear on I would then cover up even more with four or five heavy blankets, and with all of this cold protection around me, it may have been over 60 degrees under freezing but I would be just as warm as if I was in my normal bed in the house. All of that cold around me couldn’t penetrate my “armor”.
Just like physical armor that one may put on, we need to equip the armor of God, so that we can resist the temptations of the devil and the evils of this world.
Ephesians 6:10-13 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
The Word of God is our armor which we have been given to protect our souls from wickedness and sin, but like all armor it must be applied if it is going to be of use. We must read God’s Word and apply the teachings of the Bible to our lives so that we may become stronger each day in our faith. Each day surrounding ourselves with scripture, each day strengthening any weaker areas in our faith where we need some more work.
The devil has been at war with God since the beginning in the Garden of Eden, and he will try anything that he can to bring harm to the faith of those who believe in Jesus. The Bible refers to him as a lion, seeking to devour the weak, but through the strength that comes from Christ we can overcome him.
1 Peter 5:8-10 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
Think of each day in your walk in Christ as one more day that you can add to your spiritual armor. A piece here, a part there, improvements in a weak area of your faith, continued maintenance of the areas in which you may be stronger. But just continue to add onto those layers so that you can resist all of the wiles and tricks of the devil.
Be vigilant, and do it now! Get that armor of the Lord and put on, and protect your faith!
In Christ
