W. Gemmel Ridge Road

Good morning and welcome in everyone.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story..

It’s hunting season up here in Northern Minnesota, and a lot of people have begun hunting grouse.  Over the years, we have met a lot of hunters as we work out in the woods.  Recently, we met some people who had driven all the way up here, from the state of West Virginia.  We had never eaten grouse before, but they kindly offered to cook some up for us to try, and it was absolutely fantastic.  A good part of our lives have been spent out in the woods by West Gemmel Ridge Road.  Andrew and I have probably driven down this road two thousand times, and the forest behind it has become a second home for us. But each time we drive down the Ridge Road, the dirt road will eventually come to a spot where you can either go to the right or to the left.  You can stay on the Ridge Road or turn right onto the Lost River Road.  Many times we have seen Hunters who camp right under the balsam stand alongside the fork in the road, almost as if they can’t decide which way they want to go.

This reminds me of the Christian life

Each day, we are presented with choices in our lives, as to which way we are going to go.  We must decide which path we are going to follow.  When you come to a fork in the road, you can either go to the right, or to the left.  Our faith is very similar, because we only have two choices presented to us.  We can either choose to do the will of God, or to choose it not.  But the choices that we make today, about serving God’s purpose rather than our own, are integral in regards to obtaining eternal salvation.

Matthew 21:28-32  But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.  He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.  And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.  Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.  For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

When we study this passage, we learn that it is about repentance.  Repentance is about having a change of your heart, insomuch that it causes you to go in a different direction in your life.  It’s about changing your mind to do God’s will rather than your own. There’s one thing that separates a saint from a sinner.  It’s the choice that you make in your life today, about which one you want to become.

Andrew and my family know how much I hated the teaching profession.  It was something that you could never get me to do, not in a thousand years and no matter how much you paid me.  But when I was baptized by submersion in 1999, it was clear to me that in order to do God’s will, and to become pleasing unto Him, I was going to have to change my thinking on this matter. God wants men to preach and teach His Word.  The laborers are few.  This is because many men out in the world, are the same way that I used to be in the flesh. They just don’t want to do it!  Women are forbidden from teaching, so men must rise rise up to God’s calling and duty.  Our lives begin by saying I will not,  We are born into this world in a state of carnal disobedience.  But when we truly understand how much God loves us, and the suffering that He did on the cross for our salvation, that knowledge pricks us in our heart, causing us to turn around and say, I will Lord.  This is called a repentant heart, and possessing one is crucial for eternal life.

Matthew 7:21  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Genuine grace acting upon the heart of man will cause someone to turn around and do God’s will.  This is exactly what happened in the life of the Apostle Paul.  Genuine love for God will result in obedience to His will and purpose.  Paul displayed that to the world, in his faithful life towards the will of Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:10  But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

In order to do the will of God, it’s more than just having good intentions.  Doing the will of God from your heart requires action.  Your action is the proof of your love towards Him.

Romans 12:2  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Obedience to the will of God is one of the keys to Heaven.  In the carnal nature we don’t want to obey.  We don’t want to do the will of somebody else. We want to live our own life, not live our lives for somebody else.  We want to do things our way. Repenting and doing God’s will is imperative for salvation.  One must consider the words that you are saying, each time that you petition God in the Lord’s prayer.

Matthew 6:9-10  After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

To become a part of God’s heavenly family, it requires doing God’s will, and walking according to the purpose He that He has for you.

Matthew 12:46-50  While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

There will be many who come short of eternal life.  They will actually believe that they are going to be in heaven, but the truth is that they never became faithfully obedient to the will of God from their heart. A promise of eternal life is given to us, but to eventually reap that promise, you will have to prove your love for God.  It is shown through faithful obedience to His will.

Hebrews 10:36  For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

Ultimately, it comes down to making a decision towards God. Will you, or will you not, do what He is calling you to do.  It’s more than just lip service, it’s about becoming obedient to His purpose rather than your own.  They’ve always said, actions speak louder than words.  Where are the works that prove what you believe?  Where is the evidence that shows your love for God? There’s a fork in the road ahead, and you are going to have to decide which way you will go, the next time you drive down…..

The Oarlock

Good morning and welcome in everyone.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

When I was a young child, I grew up on a lake.  Down on the beach, we kept a small rowboat, that we occasionally used on a calm evening in the summer. When we wanted to use it, we would grab the oars from the garage and take them down to the lake, placing them into the oarlocks and pushing off into the bay.  If you’ve ever been in a rowboat, more than likely you understand that in order to get across the lake, you need to be pulling on both of the oars together, and at the same time.  If you are only pulling on one, you are going to find out quickly that you will only go around in circles, and you will not get anywhere.

This reminds me of the Christian life.

Grace and faith are like two oars on a rowboat. One is the God’s free gift of forgiveness, and the other is faithful works of obedience towards Christ. They must both function together If you want to get all the way home to heaven, otherwise you will only go around in circles.

Ephesians 2:8-10  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast.  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

The only way that anybody could be in heaven some day is because of what Jesus did for us at the cross.  We are unprofitable servants only doing what is our duty to do.  Salvation is by God’s grace, but it is through the corridor of faith. You need to possess them both.  Faith means to believe in something with all of your heart.  If you believe that you’re going to shoot a deer opening weekend, faith is what causes a hunter to put on his hunting clothes and walk out to his deer stand.  If you believe that you are going to catch a fish, faith is what causes a fisherman to cast his line into the lake, and begin trolling. If you believe you are going to get tomatoes in the fall, faith is what causes you to plant your garden in the spring. Faith is believing that something is going to happen in the future, and it results in an action. Without actions, your faith is dead.

If you believe that you will be going on a trip this weekend, faith is what causes you to pack your duffel bag.  If you believe it’s going to snow overnight, faith is what causes you to go purchase a snow shovel. If you believe in God’s coming kingdom, faith is what causes you to do numerous things. It will cause you to repent, to convert, to become sanctified, to do the will of God, to transform, to turn from sin, to preach God’s Word, to obey and to become a doer of God’s Word.  If things such as these don’t manifest themselves in your life, then faith really is not-existent.  God grants us a free gift of grace, but without faith, you will only find yourself going in circles.  We have the riches of God’s grace available to us through the precious blood of Christ, but without faith, one’s life cannot undergo the much needed change that is required to attain eternal life in the future. Many people claim to believe in Jesus, but to truly believe something, will result in actions.  We have to mortify the sinful deeds of the flesh, and that can only happen when we truly believe in God with our hearts.  Sanctification can only take place through belief of the truth. Without this type of life-changing faith, we are not going to be able to become pleasing unto God.

Hebrews 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Have you ever walked down a sandy beach and seen someones footprints in the sand?  You didn’t actually see the person, but they left evidence that they were there.  Have you ever gone into the bathroom, and found a dripping wet towel hanging from the shower door? You didn’t actually see anybody come out, but there was evidence that they were there.  Someone who is walking in faith towards God will have evidence too.  It will be displayed In their life and their activities towards God.  This is what the beloved Apostle James was trying to explain to the church.

James 2:17-26  Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.  Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.  Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?  Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?  Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?  And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.  Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.  Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?  For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

God’s grace and our faith, acting inside of sincere hearts, will have a cause and effect reaction.  Vinegar by itself does nothing, but when you add baking soda, a reaction takes place. Works are a by-product of genuine faith.  They are the evidence of the unseen things of God working in your heart.  So you see, we are saved by God’s grace, but if works of faith and obedience towards God never manifest themselves, the Christian life will come to a grinding halt.  This is because someone didn’t believe in God enough, to do His will.  Just as works prove that one truly believes in God, the lack of works prove that one really doesn’t.  That might sound overly simplistic, but it’s true.  If you never went down into the basement when the tornado sirens went off, did you honestly believe that there was one on its way?  We are justified by faith, but if Noah had never built the Ark, how would His family ever have been saved?  Certain religious people of Jesus day we’re doing works only to be seen by men, but what I am speaking about today, is doing works towards God that are led by the grace of God through a faithful and obedient heart.

It’s more than saying I believe in God, because those by themselves are just words.  It’s not by faith alone that we are justified, it’s not just by saying I believe.  That is just lip service Christianity.  True faith requires cooperation with, and submission to the will of God.  If faith doesn’t result in repentance and obedience to God,…… If it doesn’t develop a love for the truth and a desire to depart from iniquity,….. If it doesn’t show the evidence of purification, ceasing from sin, and loving the brethren,..,..then the thing that you possess is not faith.  All it is is someone whose feet are beating the air, and their boat is going in circles, because they were too too lazy to put the other oar in…..

Be Unashamed of Christ

Romans 1:16  “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”

To be ashamed of something is to have a feeling of shame or guilt. It is to be embarrassed because of something or someone.

One specific moment in my life I was reminded by when I think of the word “ashamed” was back when I was seven or eight years old. As I was walking down an aisle in a store one day I must have been rather careless as I somehow managed to knock something made of glass, maybe a vase or something similar, off of the shelf and onto the floor. Of course it broke instantly, and the seven or eight year old me did what I think many kids would have done, and that is run away from the area. I distanced myself from my mistake because I was embarrassed and didn’t want to get into trouble. I was ashamed.

But as we read from Paul, he wasn’t ashamed of the gospel of Christ. He wasn’t ashamed or embarrassed to let other people know that he was a man who believed in the teachings of Christ. Instead of trying to distance himself from the name of Jesus, he wanted everyone to clearly see his faith.

Faith, if it is truly faith, will not be hidden, or disguised from the view of others. Jesus likened faith to a candle, which when lit is not put “under a bushel” or out of sight where no one can see it, but is instead put into a candlestick out in the open for everyone to see. And it is our faith in Jesus and His Word that will cause us to be filled with hope.

Romans 5:1-5  “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”

Too often people are more concerned with the opinions of others and because they don’t want to be viewed by others as “weird” or “strange” because they believe in Jesus, they try to hide it. They distance themselves from Christ. But not Paul.

Philippians 1:19-21  “For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.

For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

Whether Paul was alive, or if he had posted away, he wanted to have Christ glorified in his life. If people wanted to kill him for his faith, he was ready, unafraid, unashamed. Paul’s love for the Lord was so great that whatever he came up against there would be no one who could change him to believe different.  He wanted to hear those words, Well done, thou good and faithful servant.

We need to be filled with that same faith, so that we may hear those words as well. We need to be unashamed of Christ, so that we can enter into His kingdom.

Mark 8:38  “Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

Be like Paul. Be unashamed of Christ.

In Christ

Andrew

Expelled

Good morning and welcome in everybody.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a story.

How many of you have dealt with people at school who had serious behavior problems that they wouldn’t correct.  Eventually after a few warnings the principal probably gave them detention for a few days.  If they didn’t correct themselves, they eventually had to be expelled from school.  If you have ever been expelled from school, and were professing to be a Christian, chances are that you should have been kicked out of the church for a season too. Christians are supposed to focus on becoming obedient children, not to be an example of rebellion to the world.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

There are many women today who profess to be Christian, who need to be expelled from the church as well.  They are completely disobedient and rebellious, filled up with their own arrogance and pride. The only man who is going to do this deed, is a true prophet of God.  There are many things that go on each day out in the world, that are forbidden within the church.  The world lives the way that the world does, but when we become a Christian, we are supposed to begin to live the way that God wants us to live. To do this, we must reject worldly philosophies and teachings, wholeheartedly accepting the doctrine of scripture.  A lot of us were raised many years out in the world, learning and following its unbiblical concepts,…. but now we need to reject its lies for the Truth.

1 Timothy 2:11-14  Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.  But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.  For Adam was first formed, then Eve.  And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

There are two things that the Apostle Paul specifically identifies in this passage.  First of all, the Apostle Paul did not allow women who were a part of the church, to teach in any capacity. Teaching is forbidden fruit for a woman.  Nowadays, professing Christian bodies are overrun with these types of rebellious women.  It would be incredibly naive and foolish to judge by appearances, thinking that these women are meek and obedient sheep.  The truth is, that underneath all of their external appearances, their fancy makeup and religious attire, they are only a she-wolf at heart.  It upsetted the Lord thousands of years ago, and it continues to upset Him today.  Many people claim that the church has evolved, but the teachings of God are unchangeable.  The place that they are sitting in is not the church found in scripture, it a false church of the world.

Revelation 2:20-21  Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.  And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.

Notice that these wicked women call themselves a prophetess, but their disobedience to Christ shows otherwise.  I could call myself a mechanic, but that certainly doesn’t make me one. People might profess to be followers of Jesus, but that doesn’t mean that they really are.  The Apostle Paul had the church remove a fornicator from among them, yet people continue to suffer this disobedient woman within certain professing church bodies. If they are not going to repent, cast them out for the sake of Christ.  Some people who profess to be followers of Christ, claim that they have the authority to usurp the Apostle Paul. That is about one of the most egotistical things that I’ve ever heard, and you hear it a lot from women.  Here’s a man who was chosen by Jesus Christ, and wrote a good portion of scripture that we have today, yet people reject things that He taught.

1 Corinthians 14:34-37  Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.  And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.  What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?  If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

Women are completely forbidden from teaching God’s Word in any capacity.  Do they do this out in the world? Certainly, but it’s caused by their own arrogance and disobedience to Christ.  Only men are capable of teaching others.

2 Timothy 2:1-2  Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

There are many women in false religious bodies today, who are completely deceived, lying to both themselves and others.  They are even leading young girls away from obedience to Christ.  They really believe that it’s correct behavior to go over the top of a man, and usurp his authority over women.  They do this all the time out in the world, but not within the true Church of Christ.  Through some fair speeches they deceive the hearts of the simple.  To usurp over men, is to take upon themselves the capacity to teach others.  When a woman teaches anyone biblical truth, she is usurping over the responsibility of man.  She does not have that place of authority granted to her by God.  She may show others how to love through her loving deeds and actions, but is forbidden from teaching God’s Word in any manner.  Man is made in God’s image, not a woman.

1 Corinthians 11:7-9  For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.  For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.  Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.

Even when a woman divorces her husband, she displays an open example of usurping her husbands authority.  She makes a mockery of the Christian life.  She is supposed to obey him in everything, which is impossible to do if she departs and walks off on him.  Just like what happened to Eve in the Garden of Eden, the devil is still trying to lead women astray, trying to get them to preach and teach God’s Word, in direct violation to God’s commands.  The Apostle Paul did not put up with this kind of behavior in the church. If these women weren’t going to listen to their husband, if they weren’t going to listen to the men of the church such as the Apostle Paul, if these women were so puffed up with pride, refusing to show any attempt at repentance, than the appropriate thing to do, was to have them…….

Your Gonna Get It

Good morning and welcome in everyone.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

How many times have you guys gone over to your friends’ house very late at night in order to borrow a special tool from them.  It was a tool that you didn’t have in your toolbox, but you knew that he would have it.  This was because he made his living as a mechanic.  All the lights were out, and he was already in bed, but you kept knocking on the door anyway.  You needed to get that tool in order to use your car the next morning for work, so you kept knocking over and over again until your friend eventually opened the door, to and give you what you needed

This reminds me of the Christian life.

Sometimes we don’t have something, because we don’t persistently ask for it.  Sometimes it comes down to a matter of what’s most important to you.  The wisdom that comes from God is one of the greatest things that we can possess in this world.  It guides and leads us, a lamp unto our feet, as we walk through the darkness of this place.  In order to receive it, you must ask God in faith, believing that you’re gonna get it.

Luke 11:5-13  And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;  For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?  And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.  I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.

And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.  For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.  If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?  Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?  If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

When we study the Holy Scriptures, we find God’s Holy Spirit written on the pages therin. His Holy Spirit speaks to us through His prophets and apostles, and we can find wisdom throughout its margins.  It’s waiting for us, but we need to faithfully come and find it, because it is bread that feeds our souls.

James 1:5-7  If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.  But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.  For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

God wants to liberally give us wisdom.  When something is done in a liberal manner, it is performed generously.  When you sit down at the supper table for dinner, a parent might serve you a generous portion of food.  Wisdom is defined as being able to apply knowledge that you have gained, to daily situations in your life.  It is the ability to know and apply spiritual truths, to relative parts of your day.  The Apostle desired that the church would be filled with the wisdom of God.

Ephesians 1:15-17  Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,  Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

Ephesians 3:10  To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

The Apostle Paul was constantly praying that the church would be filled with spiritual wisdom and understanding.

Colossians 1:9  For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

Colossians 2:2-3  That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;  In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Both Stephen and Timothy were wise men in the faith.

Acts 6:8, 10  And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.  And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

2 Timothy 3:15  And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

God wants to give us wisdom, and He won’t upbraid us when we come asking for it. To upbraid, means to criticize someone severely.  In order to obtain it, we must ask in faith, believing wholeheartedly that you will receive it.

Matthew 21:21-22  Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.  And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

A prayer of faith is a very powerful thing.

Mark 11:24  Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

When we ask God for wisdom, we need to ask with the type of faith that Abraham possessed.

Romans 4:18-21  Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.  And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb:  He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;  And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

Do you desire wisdom from God? How strong is that desire to obtain it? Are you seeking God persistently and diligently for this precious gift?  Do you have the faith of Abraham? If so, I known in my heart……

Twin Tanks

Good morning and welcome in everyone.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Have you ever owned a conversion van?  Many years ago, our family had one that we used to travel across the country during vacations. We ran many gallons of gas through that vehicle, but one of the nicest features was that it had two large twin tanks, so that you wouldn’t have to constantly stop at the gas station every few hours on your trip.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

In my own mind, I’ve always felt that forgiveness is very similar to filling up your gas tanks.  Sometimes we can require quite a bit, but we all need to gas up our hearts, and be merciful with each other.  Some vehicles require more gas than others, but the point being, is that our hearts need to be just as full, they need to be filled to the rim, with grace and compassion. The thing that keeps the church together, and gets us further down that spiritual road, is being merciful and forgiving with others, in their time of need.

Ephesians 4:31-32  Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Bitterness can develop when apologies are given, but someone refuses to forgive the offender from their heart.  Grace and mercy is what keeps the church together, and needs to be granted when needed or required.  If you truly forgive someone, reconciliation will immediately take place.  We learn this in the parable of the prodigal son.

Luke 15:20-23  And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.  And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.  But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:  And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:

Once again, I want you to notice that divine grace results in immediate reconciliation.  When the son admitted his fault, his Dad quickly forgave him. He never kept a bitter grudge, but completely let it go.  For one reason, that’s not love, and for the second reason, scripture has serious warnings from God about that kind of behavior.   It can result in condemnation.

James 5:9  Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.

Genuine Christian love is displayed in the actions of the prodigal son.  He admitted fault and apologized, and the dad completely forgave Him, and they went on with their lives together. This is why it’s called the gospel of reconciliation.  Many people are preaching a false gospel of non-reconciliation forgiveness.  They have been teaching for many years that somehow you can forgive someone from your heart, and not reconcile with them again. The reason why they do this, is they don’t want to suffer with the pain that somebody else committed against them, while the truth is, Jesus took the pain and the nails and suffered unto death on the cross for them. These actions are highly offensive to the Lord.

Leviticus 19:18  Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.

A bitter grudge results in a defiled and unmerclful heart.

Hebrews 12:15  Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

Romans 3:14  Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:

The Lord Jesus taught one of His Apostles about how forgiving to be with others.

Matthew 18:21-35  Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?  Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.  The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.  Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.

But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.  So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.  Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?

And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Matthew 6:14-15  For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:  But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

All of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God, and we each need portions of grace at certain times in our lives. This is why we need to be so merciful with each other, being good stewards of God’s manifold grace.

James 5:16  Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Colossians 3:12-13  Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;  Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Just as we need gas to get down the highway, each of us are going to need grace to get to heaven. Think about how you treat each other, because when it comes to forgiveness, I think that all of us in the church need to fill up our……

Leap of Faith

“If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”

Years ago our family went and camped in a very primitive area of our state, in an area known as the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, which, as the name suggests, one can only travel through the lakes in this area with a canoe or other non-motorized watercraft.

Well one day on one of our canoe trips we found a rather tall outcropping of rock rising above the edge of the lake, maybe 12 to 15 feet above the surface. It was a relatively warm day if I remember correctly and we decided that it would be fun to climb up onto the top of that rock and jump off, but when I reached the top of the rock and looked down at the lake beneath me I hesitated. It seemed like it was way higher than the 12 to 15 feet than it actually was, and I began to doubt my decision. Even though the the water of the lake was plenty deep enough to dive into I was afraid of jumping from that height. But eventually I told myself that everything was going to be alright, and my belief caused me to take that leap of faith and I ended up safely plunging until the water below, and consequent times after that as well.

It is faith and belief that we need to have when we come before the Lord in our prayers. The feeling of actually knowing that what we ask the Lord He is able to perform, just as He did in Mark 9.

Mark 9:17-29  “And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;

And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.

He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.

And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.

Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.

But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.

And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?

And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.”

In this passage the man needed to have faith in the words of Christ. He needed to truly believe that Jesus could heal his son, and when he did Jesus saw the man’s faith and the son was healed.

You can ask for all sorts of things, never actually believing that you will ever get them, but what kind of a request is that? Most often if someone asks for something it is because they need to have it, like a glass of water, for example. If someone asks for some water then they most likely are thirsty and need hydration. Asking for food because your are hungry, asking for warm clothes on a winter day because you are cold. When we ask the Lord we are seeking to obtain something, something that we need, and the Lord will see our faith and belief in Him. The Lord is full of blessings and mercy, and we can know that when we ask Him in faith, we will receive.

Matthew 21:21-22  “Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.”

So what are some things that you need in your life? Have you asked the Lord in the prayers? When asking, have you taken that leap of faith?

In Christ

The Unbendable Reed

Good morning and welcome in everyone.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Many people around our area understand that Andrew and I like to go sailing to relax, mostly because it’s cheap and doesn’t require any gas. Forty years ago, when I was in middle school, I learned how to sail.  I spent many summer vacations out on the lake learning how to control and navigate a sailboat. A few years ago, Andrew and I were sailing across one of the lakes that is close to our home.  We were going through some pretty heavy white caps, and I’m guessing that the wind was over 20 mph.  Andrew hangs out on the trapeze for counterweight on one of our catamarans, but this day was different than all others, because when I momentarily looked up to adjust our direction, he was gone.  He was about a hundred feet behind the boat because the mast had completely broken in half.  I’ve flipped over boats, and broken masts in the mud, but In 40 years of sailing I have never broken a mast, simply due to the stress of the wind.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

A mast has to be extremely strong.  It needs to be strong like a tall oak tree.  It needs to be unbendable like a reed that will not bend in the wind.  Our love for God has to be so strong that nothing can shake it.  Whatever sufferings that we might have to endure, whatever persecutions we might have to go through, our love for God has to be unmovable, and our faith in Him, unbreakable. Our love and affection for Him cannot be shaped by a wife, family or relatives.  It cannot be honed by others’ perceptions of what God is according to them.  This is why the first commandment is to love God. John the Baptist was a man who loved God in this manner.

Matthew 11:7-11  And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?  But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.  For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Love is a very powerful emotion, but first and foremost, our love has to be placed entirely on God.  It has to be greater than any other relationship in our lives.  If you cannot do that, you make yourself unworthy of eternal life.  Many years ago, when I was in high school, one of my favorite classes was astronomy.  We had a special telescope where you could look at the sun. We needed a special filter in order to do this.  I learned that in order to look at the sun we needed to block out certain things.  The same thing is true of our salvation.  To someday inherit eternal life, we need to focus on Christ and block out the temporal concerns of this world.  We need to focus on the Son of God.  He must be our greatest love. What is something that you focus on during your day?  Some people’s eyes are focused on fixing their home.  Some people’s eyes are focused on their family and relatives.  We must keep our eyes fixed on Christ. The beloved Apostle John warns us about not loving this place

1 John 2:15-17  Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Over 40 years of sailing, I’ve learned that a mast needs to be strong.  You might break a rudder, or you can break a daggerboard,  but if the mast comes down, it’s over.  It can never fail, as our love for Christ can never fail.  Our love for God is like the mast on a sailboat.  We might spring a leak, we might even rip the jib, but in order for us to get home, our love for Him must prevail.  Just like a mast is centered on a catamaran frame , God must be centered in our life in everything that we do.  When Andrew and I go sailing, the mast is the very first thing that goes up.  It is the center of power for the ship and is the source of our direction.  God is our strong tower, and He is the mast for each of our ships.

What is something in your life that you devote a lot of your time and attention to?  I’ve always felt that the more time that you spend on something, the better that you will become at it.  Scriptures clearly teach us that we are supposed to walk in love, but everybody needs to be very careful what they place that love upon.  Solomon placed a lot of love upon his wives, and it lead him away from a close relationship with God.  Some people love making money, and their love for the things of this world leads them away from devotion to Christ and His purpose.  Some people love their children and their parents more than the truth, which leads them astray from serving Christ.  Love is a very integral aspect of the Christian Life, but it can never be focused on anything else in a greater manner than in service to God. It is a very powerful feeling.  Misplaced love can cause you to become unworthy of God.  You can love a wife or your relatives more than the truth. The commandments are in an order for a reason. We need to love God more than anybody else, more than a neighbor, more than a friend, more than a wife, and more than your own children. If He isn’t greater than these relationships, you become unworthy of salvation.

Whatever we might have to go through in this life, or the sufferings that we might have to endure, our love for God has got to be an unmovable mast, firm, steadfast and secure.  It must be completely unbreakable, like an…….

The Role Model

“For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.”

Do you have any children? If you do then you probably know the importance of setting a good example for them to follow. This is something that not all children have growing up, and are instead influenced in a negative way by others around them. How many children end up in a juvenile detention facility for illegal activities that they have done? And what is a leading cause of this type of activity? Bad role models. Bad influences. Choosing the wrong kind of friends who also fuel that desire to do wrong things. Now, it is not always the parents who are to blame for their child’s actions because it ultimately comes down to the child themselves if they are rebellious or not, but a kind, loving parent can set a solid foundation for a child by showing them by their actions the way to live.

Just like an earthly parent, Jesus loves each and every one of us and He wants us to grow up to be strong, holy servants of God who live in love towards each other, and He wants us to follow the way that He lived.

John 13:1-17  “Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;

Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;

He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.

After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?

Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?

Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.

For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.”

Through the example that Jesus has shown we can have a clear image of what we ourselves should be as well. Whatever qualities that Jesus displayed are the same qualities that should be exemplified in our own life.

What are some of these qualities? They are the qualities of kindness, love, forgiveness, mercy and grace. These qualities Jesus showed every day as He walked from city to city. Everywhere He went He healed the sick, having mercy upon others and cleansing them from their infirmities. Everywhere He went, Jesus gave His forgiveness to those who came asking for it. By His life Jesus showed that love for God always needs to be first, over even your love for those closest to you in your own family.

There are many different “role models” that people may try to mimic or be like, but there is only One who they should look to for this kind of example, and that is Jesus.

.

1 Peter 2:21  “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:”

All that we need to do is look at how Jesus lived His life and mirror that. Just like the childhood game of “follow the leader” we need to follow Christ and His teachings. We need to have Him as our role model. So… is He yours?

In Christ,

Andrew

Kracatoa

Good morning and welcome in everybody Today I want to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

In 1883 one of the largest and loudest ever recorded sounds in history happened when the volcano named Krakatoa erupted. The explosion fired up hot ash, fifty miles into the air. They claim Krakatoa measured a six on the volcanic explosivity index, with a force of 200 megatons of tnt. By comparison, the bomb that destroyed the Japanese city of Hiroshima had a force of 20 kilotons or nearly 10,000 times less power. The Krakatoa eruption generated so much noise, that it’s commonly reported to be louder than the space shuttle that takes off at Cape canaveral.

This reminds me of the Christian life…

Sometimes, many people don’t really think about the incredible power of a volcano, but we must remember that God created them.  He created volcanoes, and he also created an eternal lake of fire, to punish the impenitent. Imagine what Sodom and Gomorrah must have sounded like when they were destroyed.   Numerous people today, don’t give a second thought to the power of God’s judgment.  Ultimately God is going to punish sin, but really, that is not His first choice. He sent His only begotten Son Jesus to save us, and to turn us away from our sins.   He wants all men to come to a place of repentance. Someday, heaven and Earth are going to pass away with a great noise, and I’m guessing that it will be louder than Krakatoa.

2 Peter 3:10-13  But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.  Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,  Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?  Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

When Andrew was very young, we were getting water from a continuous flowing well, which is over 200 ft deep.  It’s approximately 10 miles from our home.   As we filled up our water jugs one day, I happened to see a military fighter jet, approaching in the the corner of my eye.  It came at us very fast, and at an extremely low altitude. I don’t think he was more than 50 feet above the treetops.  I yelled at Andrew to hit the deck, because I wasn’t sure why he was so low, and maybe he was trying to emergency land his plane. To this day, that must be the loudest thing that either of us have ever heard In our lives.  I’m sure now, that the pilot didn’t know that we were there, because he peeled off into higher terrain afterwards. The airforce trains in the remote areas of our county, but the point being, that jet motor was LOUD.

What’s the loudest thing that you have ever heard?  Maybe it was a deer rifle, or a bomb that was dropped during a war. Possibly it was a hand grenade, or maybe you lit off a brick of firecrackers. But what do you suppose it’s going to sound like, when the heavens are destroyed with a great noise?  When Jesus returns in the heavens above, this event will be like no other in history.  The heavens and the Earth where we reside will be destroyed, and His faithful, will be carried away by the angels to a new home.  Can you imagine what kind of sound might be produced, when the entire universe and all of its celestial bodies are destroyed by God?

Luke 17:26-29  And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.  They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.

Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;  But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

Each day many people live on this earth and don’t even contemplate or think about death.  None of us are in control of our life, as much as one would want to think that they are.  Our life and death does not matter on what we eat, or how much we walk the treadmill each day.  For what it is worth, I am convinced that life and death is not something that any of us can control, residing only in the hands of our blessed God.  After all, He created life, and He can take it when he wishes.  When God decides that this world is done, it will be dissolved according to His will.  You can’t save the planet, because God will eventually destroy it.

Isaiah 34:4  And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.

How many of you have been told that somebody passed away? The Lord Jesus teaches us that both heaven and Earth shall pass away, but His words are eternal.

Matthew 24:35-44  Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.  Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

The current earth that we live in has both the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, but upon the new earth that is coming, There will not be a sea anymore.

Revelation 21:1  And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

There is a new world that is coming, and it will not be the place that we currently living. To attain that world, means that you need to come to Christ Jesus and believe on the things that He preached.  God calls us to repentance.

2 Peter 3:8-13  But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.  The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward,   not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

God is very patient and He is waiting for us to change our minds. Will you change and turn from sin? I guarantee you, that a loud noise is eventually coming when this Earth and everything in it is destroyed.  In my own mind I would guess that it will be a lot louder than the explosion at…..
