Our Father Who Art in Heaven…

In Luke chapter 11 Jesus taught His disciples how to pray.

Luke 11:1-4  And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

Give us day by day our daily bread.

And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

Everything happens according to the Lord’s timing and the Lord’s will. There may be times when we do not understand why some things happen the way that they do, but we must simply accept the Lord’s will as He reveals it. The Lord is filled with infinite wisdom and things might happen in our lives that might seem to puzzle us, but we must always remember that everything that He does has a purpose.

I guess you might consider it both ways when it says “Give us day by day our daily bread.” One, the word of God is our bread of life, Jesus is our bread of life that we need in order for our spiritual soul to live and thrive. Each day we need to have the word of the Lord in our lives, just as we need air to breathe. It is essential. And two, we may pray to the Lord to provide us with our actual physical daily bread, the food which sustains us each day. Just as the Lord provides for the needs of the animals in the forests, He can provide for all of our needs as well. Because you see, our prayers are our way of asking the Lord for the things that we need, and when we ask of Him we can have solace in the knowledge that He does hear us, and will provide us with all of our food, Spiritual and physical.

Luke 11:9-13  And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?

Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Next, Jesus moved on to another need that every person has, and that need is forgiveness. Forgiveness is something that is a requirement for us to have if we desire to enter into Heaven, and Jesus instructs us to pray for our forgiveness so that we might be made right with the Father and without sin before Him. Sin is something that displeases God the Father greatly, and this is why it is imperative that we have those sins completely taken away. But not only that, Jesus also teaches us in that prayer that we must be forgiving with others the same as we have been forgiven by God. Forgiveness is an act that must be both accepted and given.

And lastly the Lord teaches us in the prayer to ask to be not led into temptation, but to be delivered from evil. Temptations are trials that everyone goes through, and it is through the trying of our faith that we are made strong. With a strong faith we will be able to resist the devil, and when we do he will flee from us.

Have you said your prayers yet today?

In Christ
