Roundabout

Good morning and welcome in everybody.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Before I became a believer, I used to travel across the country for work. For many years I lived out of my van, with a box full of atlases and maps to guide me to the next job site. Although I’ve gone through my fair share of cloverleafs, it wasn’t until recently that I approached something on the highway that I had never seen before. It is known as a roundabout. Once I was in it, I kept circling round and round trying to make sure that I got off on the right exit.  Over in Malaysia, it’s been claimed that the the Putrajaya roundabout holds the record for being the largest roundabout in the world. It’s over 3 km in circumference and features 15 different entry points. That’s a lot of different places where you could end up going the wrong way. If you don’t make the right decision, and follow the right path, you will end up at a completely different destination.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

The choices that you make each day can result in a greatly different outcome than what you had planned. Those who claim to be believers in Jesus Christ are supposed to follow the teachings and the guidance of God’s Holy Word. When we have a question about which direction to take in our life, we must first consult the teachings of scripture. They are supposed to dictate our decision making. This is true wisdom. God’s Word is like a spiritual map that keeps us heading in the right direction.  If you are going to choose to reject the counsel of scripture, and the men of God that He used to write to the church, then you are venturing into uncharted territory, and off of the path that God has placed us on.

Matthew 7:13-14  Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Many people who fly planes commercially can understand what it means when they need to make choices based upon the safety of themselves and their passengers.  When they have questions, they refer to the flight manual. Their response to a given situation, is dictated by the answers that they find within. Likewise, men of God wrote to the church and gave us directions and answers to keep our flight heading in the right direction and operating smoothly.  There are many seducers and deceitful men in this world that will try to lead you the wrong way. Before listening to them, we must first consult Spiritual men such as Peter, James and John, who guide us on the path that leads to blessings, and eternal life.

2 Timothy 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Once again, we are called to follow the path of Christ, but if you make one wrong turn in the Christian Life, it can result in you finding yourself in a completely different destination than what you had originally planned. The Christian Life is a walk, and every scripture in God’s Word is like a stepping stone on our path. Maybe when you were a child you can remember trying to stay on them as they led you through the backyard and down to the lake. Each day we need to find the answers to the choices that we make in God’s Holy Word. When someone chooses to ignore the directions that God has given us, it can produce drasticly negative results in your life.

When Andrew and I go sailing, there are times that we must change direction. When you do, the leading edge of the sail, which is called the luff, must always be pointed into the wind. This is done to underpower the sail. If you don’t do this, the boom can come flying around and hit you right in the head. There is a right way and a wrong way to do things. There is a right path and a wrong path to take. You can do things God’s way or man’s way. When you choose to do things your own way, it might feel like the right thing to do at the moment, but it is a path that only leads to death.

Proverbs 16:25  There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Men in their carnal nature do not consult God for answers, because they think that everything that they do is the right thing to do.

Proverbs 21:2  Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.

Proverbs 12:15  The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.

God’s Word gives us spiritual directions that lead us on the path to eternal life. Sometimes I’m reminded of this whenever driving through a large city. Many times they will place huge signs over the interstates that give you a clear warning of the upcoming turn that you must make. They even have exit numbers, kind of like numbers given to the scriptures that help us find the right way to go. You must follow them perfectly, otherwise you can get lost and find yourself in a different part of town that you didn’t want to be in.  Obviously to get through town we have to obey. Without obedience to God’s will the Christian Life comes up short. God wants to guide us and take us in the right direction, but if you choose to fight against it, blessings are not going to happen. Blessed are those who hear the will of God, and do it.

I don’t know if I could begin to count how many times that I’ve read Robinson Crusoe. I found one copy at a rummage sale that must be over 100 years old. If you ever get the opportunity to read this book, you will find that the son refused to accept the advice of his dad. Because of this, his entire life went haywire and into a state of chaos. He ended up being stranded for many years out in the middle of the ocean. He entered into many years of suffering simply because of his own foolishness when he rejected the counsel of someone who had years of experience before he was even born. God’s Word was written many years ago by men who were in the true faith long before any of us were. When we need help to stay on the right path, we must listen to their words of wisdom, and humbly submit to them. We must reject the wisdom of man, knowing that God’s way is the best way.

So when you need to make a decision, make sure that you consult the Word of God first. We can find the answers that we need in scripture. We must obey them, as God leads us on the path to eternal life, guiding us each day, and helping us to find our way through the next…….
