Little Green Pickup

Good morning and welcome in everybody.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

I’ve had a little green pickup for many years, and although it was in really good shape when I first got it, it has slowly started to show its age. I’ve been extremely thankful for it, but like many older vehicles, it bears the marks of previous bumps and bruises from being used regularly out in the woods. It is becoming weak and frail, and incapable of doing certain things that it did when I first bought it. Although occasionally you need to patch it up, it must be expected that its body is only going to last for a certain amount of time, until everything on it slowly starts to wear out or completely rust away.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Sometimes, when people want to get a new vehicle they will trade in the old one, which is exactly what’s going to happen when we are raised unto eternal life. In the twinkling of an eye, God will give us a brand new body, kind of like getting a brand new truck!

1 Corinthians 15 ³⁵ But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come? ³⁶ Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die: ³⁷ And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain: ³⁸ But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.

Our Earthly bodies are continuing to age every single day. This is because of the downfall in the garden of Eden when death came upon all men.

1 Corinthians 15 ²¹ For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. ²² For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

But through repentance and faith in Christ, those who serve the Lord Jesus Christ will go on to live forever in eternity. But the only way that this is going to happen is by obtaining a new body, one that is built to live forever. Like getting a brand new car, we need a brand new body, one that is capable of going billions of miles and never decaying or growing old. Whenever you plant a seed in the ground, it needs to die in order to produce fruit. Although the fruit that it produces will be very similar, it is not the exact same seed that was originally planted in the ground. When we die physically we are buried in the ground, but in order to enter into eternal life we must have a brand new body. It will certainly resemble the body that we now have, the one main difference is that it will never die.

1 Corinthians 15 ³⁹ All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds. ⁴⁰ There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.

Think about all of the different creatures that God has created in this world, some of them have feathers while others have scales, but each of their bodies were built for a specific purpose by God. Likewise, our Earthly bodies were meant as temporary housing, but our celestial body will be our eternal residence.

1 Corinthians 15 ⁴¹ There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory. ⁴² So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: ⁴³ It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: ⁴⁴ It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. ⁴⁵ And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

We started out our lives in these sinful bodies, kind of like learning to drive with our first pickup. But someday through faithfulness to Christ we can graduate and go on to receive a brand new one. Like your old truck bears resemblance to a new one, our Earthly bodies look very similar to the ones that are coming in the future.

1 Corinthians 15 ⁴⁶ Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. ⁴⁷ The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. ⁴⁸ As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. ⁴⁹ And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

In this world we are made of flesh and blood, but these things are not going to inherit God’s Kingdom. This is why the Lord Jesus taught Nicodemus that he needed to be born again. Our corruptible bodies cannot inherit eternal life. But although death is happening on the outside, through faith and repentance towards God, life is working on the inside.

2 Corinthians 4 ¹⁶ For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

¹⁷ For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;

1 Corinthians 15 ⁵⁰ Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. ⁵¹ Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, ⁵² In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. ⁵³ For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

When we faithfully serve Jesus, He’s going to give us a brand new body as it pleases Him, and our victory over death will be complete.

1 Corinthians 15 ⁵⁴ So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. ⁵⁵ O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? ⁵⁶ The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. ⁵⁷ But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁵⁸ Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Jesus has already died so that we could live, but in order to enter into eternal life, we need to prove ourselves faithful through repentance and complete submission to His will. In the blink of an eye, our bodies will be changed from mortal to immortal. Until that day finally arrives, we must abide faithful to our precious Lord Jesus Christ, waiting patiently for His return and continuing to drive the….
