Shedding Needles

Every autumn here in Minnesota the leaves in the deciduous trees will begin to change color from green to yellow, red, orange or brown, until they eventually fall off of the tree altogether. But even the evergreen trees will shed off some of their needles around September and October, as some of the older needles on the tree will turn from green to yellow, eventually falling off. Because while evergreen trees have their needles year round, they too go through a yearly purge of their old needles.

Well, that yearly purge is really quite similar to when we come before the Lord and partake in Holy Communion. When we partake of Holy Communion it is symbolic of the sacrifices of the Old Testament. Where once we would have to offer up some kind of animal as a sacrifice unto God every year to cover our sins, Holy Communion is the partaking of the body and blood of the Lord Jesus to completely take away our sins entirely.

1 Corinthians 11:24-26  And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

Just as the needles in the trees turn colors, die, and fall off with the change of the seasons, purging off those old, dead needles, every time we have Communion we remember what the Lord did and the love and grace He has for us, as He offers us forgiveness for our sins, and our old, dead sins are taken away.

If something is “dead” it obviously is not alive, right? If you go to change the batteries in a flashlight would you put one dead battery in with a brand new one? Probably not. You would throw away that dead battery and replace it with a new one. Into the trash with the old, and in with the new.

As Christians we must partake in Holy Communion so that we may have the life of our Lord Jesus inside of us.

John 6:53-58  “Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.

This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.”

It is sin that will keep a person out of Heaven, more specifically, unrepented sin. Death is the result of sin, so we need to rid ourselves of it, and be filled with goodness, righteousness, and truth. We must turn away from our sins, shedding those sins just like the needles off a tree.
