Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
When the food begins to run low up in the cupboard, and everything in the pantry begins to disappear, a lot of people will jump into their car and run to the grocery store. But one of the worst times to shop for food is on a completely empty stomach. This is because when you are extremely hungry, your eyes will get really big, searching for whatever you can to quickly put inside of it. What happens is that people tend to buy things that they normally wouldn’t purchase. Rather than buying staples, they will begin filling up their shopping carts with things such as snacks and pre-prepared foods, just so they don’t have to waste a lot of time cooking.
This reminds me the Christian Life.
When the stomach is hungry, people will quickly find something to put inside of it. The same thing happens when people rush out into the world and have not filled up on the teachings of scripture. When this happens, they will fill up on everything else, just like children filling up on candy and junk food. Because their hunger has not been satisfied with Spiritual things, they will fill up on all of the other things of this world instead.
Matthew 5:6 (KJB) Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
When we eat a good meal at the breakfast table, most often we don’t have a desire for anything else. For example, there might be some chocolate cake in the fridge, or a bunch of cookies on the kitchen counter, but once you are filled up, you really don’t require anything else. I like to drink extremely cold water, but although it tastes so good, there is only so much of it that you can drink until you are completely full. Once you are satisfied, you no longer have a desire for anything else because your stomach has reached it’s limit. Well, the reason why so many people get involved with sin and temptations in this world, is because they are not getting filled up each morning with the teachings of Holy Scripture. It is our Spiritual food supply, and you want to make sure that you step out into the world, after getting filled up on a satisfying meal of God’s Holy Word.
1 Peter 2:2-3 (KJB) As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
Our hearts and our minds can become very hungry, but if they are not focused on Spiritual things, they generally will crave after everything else in this world instead. The heart of man is very fickle, which is why you have to make sure that it’s filled up with all of the right things. Our greatest love in this world must be focused on our precious Lord Jesus and His teachings, because when people get too far into this world without filling up on Spiritual breakfast beforehand, they can become ensnared in the quicksand of sin.
1 John 2:15-17 (KJB) Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Matthew 22:36-38 (KJB) Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.
God needs to be first in our day, including our prayer lives; the singing of Psalms; and even reading His Holy Word. He needs to be first on our itinerary, because just like somebody who skips breakfast, if they don’t fill up on Spiritual things in the morning, they will eventually run out of energy during the day. This isn’t a good thing, because we are fighting a Spiritual battle in this world, and just like any soldier in the military, soldiers of Christ must be well fed. If your hearts are not filled up with Spiritual things, the mind will become quickly focused on the fast food of the flesh instead.
Romans 8:5-6 (KJB) For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Our hearts are like a gas tank, one that you can put in either unleaded or diesel. When they are completely full, you can’t put in anything else! But once they begin to dwindle on empty, that is the point in which something else could be put into the tank by mistake. This is why we need to make sure that the tanks of our hearts are topped off each morning with the teachings of Scripture. This is so the will of God is at the forefront of our mind throughout the day, so that we are prepared for any eventualities, and can walk before Him each day with a clean conscience.
Acts 24:16 (KJB) And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
1 Timothy 1:5 (KJB) Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
You also must remember that the flesh and the Spirit will fight against each other, and in order to combat the flesh, will require being filled up with the Holy Spirit. I’ve always compared it to a tug of war that children might play at school. Obviously, if you have got 10 children on one side and one on the other, the side with more weight is going to win! Likewise, the more scripture that we can place inside of our hearts, the stronger we will become. What happens is people become very weak because they are not seeking the things of God, and then they fall into temptations and sin. One sure warning signal that you are heading into your day completely undernourished, is if you haven’t spent any time with the Lord in the morning. To walk in the Spirit, we must be filled with the Spirit which will only happen by diligently seeking God from the heart
Galatians 5:16-17 (KJB) This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
Just like hungering for breakfast after a long night’s sleep, we must be hungry for the Spiritual things of God.
Psalms 63:1 (KJB) O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
Psalms 42:1-2 (KJB) As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?
Getting a good breakfast in the morning helps give you the fuel that you need to work hard at whatever you do, but filling up on the things of God is by far the most important breakfast that you could have. Be forewarned, that if you choose to skip God in the morning, you are not going to be filled up with the Spiritual sustenance that you need to fight off all of the sinful temptations of this world. Just make sure that you seek him early, and never leave the house on……
