The Thermos

Good morning and welcome in everyone.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

I like to drink my fair share of coffee, but like other improvements on inventions throughout the years, the thermos has undergone a few changes. I didn’t realize this until somebody threw one of these newer ones onto one of my scrap loads. It had a broken handle so I repaired it, cleaned it out thoroughly and filled it up with fresh coffee. I only drank a cup that first day, and the thermos sat out in the cold air until the following afternoon. To my amazement, when I finally opened it up, steam came rolling off the top, and everything was still piping hot! Many of you might know that the older thermoses were insulated with a glass interior, but many of the new ones use a double wall of stainless steel with a vacuum seal in between which prevents the heat from dissipating too quickly.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Like keeping coffee warm, we need to keep our hearts warm each and every day by keeping them well insulated from the coldness of sin. The more time that passes without the influence of scripture, the colder the heart will become, and like filling up a mug of hot chocolate, we must always make sure to keep them filled up with the warmth of the Spiritual teachings of Christ.

Matthew 24:11-12 (KJB)  And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

Some people’s hearts are like a tin cup, and when you fill them up with hot tea, they are cold an hour later. This is because they are not insulated with the teachings of scripture. When the temperatures begin to plunge below zero, many people in our area will put on many layers of clothing to protect themselves from the cold. Before any of us venture out into the world, we must do the same by surrounding our hearts with layers of scripture in order to keep our lamps burning brightly and protected from the coldness of sin.

Hebrews 3:13 (KJB)  But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

The more active sin is in a person’s life, the less love for God that they possess. It’s kind of like a teeter totter, with God on one side and the world on the other. Whatever carries the bulk of your love is going to outweigh the other. Many people claim to love their neighbor as themself, but that is not enough to get to heaven. This is because the first commandment is to love God with all of our heart, souls and minds, and it is a love that must be greater than anyone or anything.

Matthew 22:36-38 (KJB)  Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.

Sin will no longer abound in the hearts of those who truly love God. This is because they will love the Lord so much that they will repent of dead works and walk in the teachings of scripture. Genuine love for God is proven by our actions as we become faithfully obedient to His will.

John 14:21-24 (KJB)  He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

When sinful activities abound in someone’s life, the heart will become cold for God, just like a cup of coffee that you would set down on a snow bank while you are out ice skating. This is why we must be exposed daily to the teachings of scripture, so we don’t allow sin to enter into our lives and turn the warmth of a loving obedient heart into a cold and lukewarm devotion.

Revelation 3:15-16 (KJB)  I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

We must never allow ourselves to become cold-hearted through the deceitfulness of sin, and it can creep into a person’s life just like a cold draft in an old home. If you have a log house, sometimes you will get a little hole in the chinking and begin to feel the cold winter air coming in from the outside. What do you do? You plug the hole with some insulation so that you can keep warm. More than likely you will also turn up the heat by adding a few more logs to the fire! That is essentially what must do every single day in the Christian walk. We must insulate our hearts by keeping out any sinful influences from this world, and making sure to keep the things of God inside.

Colossians 3:16 (KJB)  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Like seeing a ship on the horizon, the worst era that has ever been known in history is quickly approaching. It will be a period of history that is completely void of a genuine love for the Lord God, and the doctrines of the Christian faith. A lot of this is due because of the growing number of false prophets that are actively attempting to lead people away from the will of God. This is why you must put on Spiritual armor, and insulate your souls by having your loins gird about with biblical truth.

Ephesians 6:13-14 (KJB)  Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth,……..

Like a scuba diver putting on a dry suit and plunging deep into freezing water, God’s Word can protect us from the coldness of the sinful world, but we must keep ourselves well insulated with many layers of scripture, kept warm by the teachings of Christ, like a cup of hot coffee kept warm in…..
