Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
How many of you are poor? Jesus teaches that the poor are blessed by God, and there are quite a few of us who live in extreme poverty, I mean, when was the last time that you began searching for some dimes and quarters from inside your vehicle? But the sad thing is that when people start chasing after a dollar bill, it really pulls them away from a close relationship with the Lord. I mean, there are only so many hours in the day! Perhaps you can relate with how that feels, when your spouse is gone at work all day long. The Lord Jesus wants us to seek Him with a pure and loving heart, after all, this is the first and great commandment, and the church is the bride of Christ. But when people chase after Earthly wealth, it takes them away from spending time with the Lord. It would be no different than Him walking to the Sea of Galilee, but then you decided to go off to work for the day instead. It is the poor of this world who are rich in faith, simply because they are focusing their time and their efforts on Him rather than this world. Poverty brings great Spiritual treasures from God.
James 2:1-9 (KJB) My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called? If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
Moses wanted the things of God so much, that he completely walked off of any type of inheritance in Egypt. Those things didn’t really matter to him at all, in comparison to the Spiritual treasures in Christ Jesus.
Hebrews 11:24-26 (KJB) By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
There are many things that we can do during our day to seek after the Lord, such as through prayer, worship, fasting and bible study. And in order for you men to be fruitful it’s going to require devoting some of your time to preaching too! But when people get caught up seeking after riches, it can be a huge downfall to progression in the Christian Life.
Matthew 13:22 (KJB) He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
Luke 6:20 (KJB) And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for your’s is the kingdom of God.
God will reward those who diligently seek Him, but it’s going to require your time. Many things that you might do during your day can be a complete distraction and devotion to God.
Matthew 5:3 (KJB) Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Luke 6:24-25 (KJB) But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.
The love of money is the root of all evil, and it can turn you into an absolutely cruel and heartless person.
Luke 16:19-31 (KJB) There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
Remember that someday the rich men are going to fade away.
James 1:9-11 (KJB) Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
Psalms 41:1 (KJB) Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.
Like the Apostles and disciples of Christ, Men of God have chosen to become poor in this world, so they can focus their time on bringing forth the greatest Spiritual Riches of all,…so,….
……..Blessed Be Ye Poor
