Shooting from the Hip

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

When I was first baptized by submersion over 25 years ago, I went to many different Church groups in order to find a place that actually believed in the teachings of scripture. Some of these places never even preached from a Bible and you couldn’t even find one in the pews! Others were preaching philosophy and worldly teachings that had nothing to do with gaining wisdom from the incorruptible Word of God. There were even a few of them that I got kicked out of, simply because when I took them to scripture, they became argumentative and even threw me out the front door. When I walked out of these places I never returned, because what they were doing had nothing to do with Spiritual education and biblical exposition. Rather than being involved with hermeneutics they were involved with heresy! Many of these so-called preachers and pastors didn’t quote any verses or cross references in their so-called sermons, and seemed to be preaching everything but the Scriptures.

This reminds me of the Christian Life

In most situations, I usually don’t like to talk about biblical things or give advice in Spiritual areas without the teachings of Scripture right in front of me, or having Bible verses readily available to support my beliefs. A lot of people don’t do this at all, but the truth is that if they are not backing up what they say with the teachings of Holy Scripture, then they are only shooting from the hip.

2 Timothy 4:2 (KJB)  Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

When somebody shoots from the hip it means that they speak impulsively and without any real preparation or thought beforehand. For example, in a college setting a professor will plan out their lesson for the following day. They will do outlines of what they want to talk about and have a good idea of how they are going to help the students understand complex ideas. They might prepare some charts, graphs or visual aids to help explain their point. Even in a K-12 setting, many teachers will do a lot of prepping beforehand so that they have a good understanding of what they are going to talk about the next day to their students. Now, how many times have you heard somebody talk about a specific topic, but then later realized that they had no comprehension at all about what they were talking about! This can be infuriating because it’s not only a waste of your time but it exposes their complete laziness to provide a good understanding of what they are trying to teach. Most people who have met me understand that I like to learn, and if I don’t understand something such as how to repair something on my vehicle, I ask questions. But when it comes to the teachings of the Scriptures, you never want to try to answer things that have not yet been revealed to you from the Word of God; something that the Apostle Paul explained to Timothy.

2 Timothy 2:23 (KJB)  But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.

Many times in order to help people to understand Spiritual things, the Lord Jesus would use a parable to get His point across. During my life I have found that it can be very helpful to educate others in biblical Truth by using a simplistic story, but whenever you use anything to explain your point better, you have to first prepare and know what you are talking about! Whether it’s preaching, writing devotionals, or helping educate others in a Bible study, it is the Word of God that must take center stage above and beyond anything else. You can’t educate people on how to speak German if they show up to class and you are teaching Spanish instead! Scripture also needs to be backed up with other scripture, cross references, and a good understanding of the meaning of words. You want to make sure that people cannot resist the wisdom by which you speak, which will only happen when your teachings are well rooted in Biblical Truth. Those who don’t have Scripture to back up what they are trying to talk about, are only going to find themselves hanging out in the wind. In order to convince others of the Truth, then you will need to have a good understanding of sound doctrine.

Titus 1:9 (KJB)  Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Acts 6:9-10 (KJB)  Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

In this day and age, we are surrounded by false prophets who are preaching and teaching a false gospel. They are even taking scripture and twisting it in order to justify wicked living such as fornication, homosexuality, women preaching and even divorce. They claim to be a Christian but they are a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and are no different than the people that Jesus rebuked 2,000 years ago. Many of them are in love with their own voice, and are involved with religion simply because they love to be seen and heard by others. Woe unto them, because they will receive the greater damnation. Unlike those who pervert the teachings of scripture, a man of God must know what he is talking about.

2 Timothy 2:15 (KJB)  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

You must always pay attention to doctrine.

1 Timothy 4:16 (KJB)  Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Titus 2:1 (KJB)  But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

There are many seducers and deceivers in this world today who will try to lead you away from the will of God, just as the devil did in the Garden of Eden. Oh, they know some Scripture, but they use it in a manner to lead you away from God’s will, and to justify sinful living. The devil is filled with religious pride, just like Capernaum whom Jesus rebuked, but God will deal with the works of the devil in due course.

1 Timothy 6:3-5 (KJB)  If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

Men are commanded to preach God’s Word, not only in our homes but in society as well. Like a college professor, just make sure that you have a good understanding of what you are talking about, and keep focused on Scriptural Truth, because without biblical teachings to back up what you are saying, you will only find yourself,……
